Apply for Outland within Canada

Hi everyone,

I am currently in Canada with a WHV and I'm gathering the documents to apply for a PR through my boyfriend. I am planning on applying for the outland as for Italians is faster and I would be able to travel while waiting. I know for sure that I can apply for the outland within Canada, my question is: can I take the medical exams here or do I have to go back? I haven't found this information anywhere and I'm getting a little paranoid...
Is there anyone that applied for the outland within Canada that could give me some information about their own experience? If they had any problems with the CIC or anything else that I should be aware of?

My partner is applying outland in Canada and we've had two medicals done in Canada (the first one expired). You should definitely get it done in Canada if you can because the prices seem to be better. They are better than in the U.S. at least. I'm not sure about Italy, but add a flight and you definitely don't want to go back to Italy to get medicals. Make sure that you tell the clinic that it's an outland application. Some of them are more used to doing inland and might accidentally do it the wrong way.

The only drawback to an outland application is that you would have to travel to (Rome, I guess) if an interview is required. I don't think they do many interviews of Italians, though. The interview rate is much higher in countries with a lot of fraud cases.

yes, the medical can be done in canada. it can be done anywhere in the world as long as it's done by a panel physician. there are no rules against this.

there are many people who do this, and there is no issue at alll. it does not negatively affect your application and has no bearing on your application becasuse outland processing has nothing to do with where the applicant is physically. the only things to be aware of are when entering canada, to have proof of ties to your home country and using the right language (visiting instead of living/moving), and if you plan to stay longer than your allowed stay, then you need to apply to extend your stay as a visitor so you don't lose status.

Sorry I didn't give enough details, yes we have been living together for more than one year now so we qualify for the common-law category

Try to get used to referring to him as a common-law partner rather than a boyfriend. You don't want to give the impression that you haven't really decided if he is "the one." As long as you've lived together in a marriage-like arrangement for at least one year uninterrupted, it's just as good as a marriage when it comes to immigration.

I have noticed the outland processing times are faster (Australia) - am I able to apply outland while still remaining in Canada? I have an extended visitor visa right now valid for another year - once you submit an application do you have implied status? It's hard to find information on the CIC website and I want to do the right thing!

Also I have noticed that now if you apply inland you can apply for an open work permit - I guess the same option is not available if you apply outland?....it's a hard choice! The current processing time is 25 months and it's a bit overwhelming for me to think that I wouldn't be able to leave Canada at all during that time....

You certainly can apply outland while remaining in Canada. Just applying for PR does not give you implied status. Before your visa expires, you need to apply to extend your stay. While they are processing the request for extension, you do have implied status. What is your citizenship? That's important to knowing about the visa situation.

In many countries, I think the entire PR application would be done before the first stage of the inland process and then you would be able to work anyway. Again, this may depend on what your citizenship is, so you should let us know for the best advice.

Definitely apply outland through Sydney. It is a very fast VO, averaging around 6-8 months.

There is no work permit option with outland but you will be a PR MUCH faster and be able to come and go from Canada without worrying about risking your PR app.

It looks like the current processing time is 85 days (for sponsor) and then 11 months (through the Australian office) so it is almost a year quicker to complete the whole process (comparing outland to inland).

It is of course a challenging situation to be living in Canada and not be able to work for that whole time, but as I understand it the open work permit is only an option if you apply inland, so I cannot work until the entire outland process is complete I assume?

Also my visitor status will expire in October this year - will I still be able to apply for an extension on this status as usual even though I have applied outland?

I'm also wondering about healthcare during this time - I currently buy travel insurance to cover me for medical but have been told that you can sometimes apply for healthcare while the application is being processed - would this apply to outland also?

11 months is how long it took to process 80% of apps. The actual average is less.

You cannot work with an outland app until you become a PR.

Yes, you can apply for a visitor extension with an outland app.

Some provinces give healthcare to visiting spouses but most won't give you coverage until after you are a PR.
