apply for extention of visitor status in Canada while study permit in process?

Hi,

have a friend who's from a visa-exempt country staying in Canada as a traveller. her visitor visa will expire on march 17th and she just sent her application for study permit to NY. she's worried she might not receive her study permit before her visitor visa expires. Should she apply for the extension of visitor status to Vegreville or not? Some say she should, some say she doesn't have to, and some say she cannot. she doesn't want to become illegal. Please PMM and other masters, help her to know what to do!!

if your friend is not going to travel outside of canada, she doesn't need the TRV
