Dear fma, agreed with you in general but with one minor yet very important clarification to add:

Disagreeing with opponent's opinion on any subject matter and firmly stating your own opinion on the same = Acceptable

Launching Ad Hominem and intentionally offensive comments about the Person whose opinion you disagree with instead of making an argument on merits = Totally Unacceptable
