You are welcome!!! Well, Let me share my experience in canada.
Back ground: I was in USA for about 5 and half to 6 years. A company has offered me a full time position in canada through work permit.
This is how I did: I got my visa stamping done at buffalo consulate(walk in). Just drove by to toronto and stayed in a hotel for about 10 days and did search for apartments for rent. I had previlage. If any one is gonna come from USA, I would recommend this way.
If any one is coming from india directly, You have no choice except to believe some people here.
Why and How? You can browse online apartments/basements/condos etc which are available for rent. Here is a website that may help you. www.kijiji.ca. My advice is to go on to google.com and search for something like "condos for rent in <area name>". Now, how do you know about area name? It depends on where you want to live. Normally people would like to stay close to grocerry stores, communte etc. I can suggest the place where I live now. Its mississauga where most new immigrants would come here.
My suggestion is to find a place on the net, find contact info, speak to the landlord and explain him/her that you are coming for the first time as new immigrant. Try to avoid lease. Land lords would ask for lease. Never getting into the mode of lease since you havent seen the place yet. Come here. Stay at a place for 2 to 3 months. If you like it, you can extend your stay otherwise you will move out. Clearly set your expectations like this with the landlord. Do not comprimise until you find a landlord with these conditions. There are lot of landlords available who are offering basements accepting to these conditions.
Try going onto maps.google.com and search for "Dundas Street East, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada". browse through the map and see what are there close by.
Transits: GO and TTC which connects to Toronto downtown. Mississauga transit: local city transit.
Stores: Dundas st has got all the indian grocerry stores other big stores etc.
Once you are here, there will be a check list to go through.
Hope this info helps.
Thanks,
satya.
