It is better to buy warm cloths from there...
However, it is not advised to buy Sweaters, Jackets etc from here. It doesn't provide the warmth in the low temperature of Canada. You have to buy these things in Canada. Furthermore, my friends told that your joggers, shoes, that you take from Pakistan, cracks at low temperatures and you have to buy new ones there.

1- metro/bus;
- one way trip = $2-3
- monthly unlimited pass = $70-80

2- Cellular
- $35-40/month package (without phone - unlimited calls usually), since you have a phone already i guess

3- Winter clothes (this is a one-time expenditure but will cost considerably)
- Jacket for extremely low temp, shoes, gloves and warm cap that can sustain in snowy conditions! (don't bother buying them from Pakistan as you will regret, you will hardly find any gear here that is suitable for such low temperatures) - $550-650

4- Other expenditures like applying for work permit which is approx. $110 (but not sure). So you need to have some extra cash!

that is true ........ jackets from Pakistan dont work here ........ the ones that work would be too heavy for u to wear ....... so dont buy from Pakistan ..... Shoes crack for sure ............ even if u buy the sole design is not for snow ...... and ice ........ many people who immigrate here in Canada ..... break their arm or leg in first winter ...... there is lots of black ice ......... on roads be careful while walking on streets .........

Warm jeans are very hard to find.... It is advisable to buy winter clothes from there. As we have no idea exactly how cold it feels
when the temperatures fall below -15C
its cold but seriously i think it does not matter ............... -15 pe ap ke skin wse he freeze ho jati ha ........ so it does not make any difference if temp is -30 or -45............. thats wot i felt ........

there is not worries wse about winter ................ u have to properly dress ur self ............ thats the key ......... cover ur head hands ......... u would be fine ............

Go to the following websites;

http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/
and
http://montreal.kijiji.ca/

look for "rooms/shared" in these lists.

Important points;
1- Look for an accommodation in downtown montreal as it is 5 mins walk from concordia SGW campus. Although this will be a little expensive but it will literally save you any travelling cost at all.
2- Shared accom with other people (2-3) will cost you somewhere between CAD 350-550 and individual accom will cost you around CAD 650-850 in downtown. Cost mostly depends on your own lifestyle
3- It is almost impossible to book an accom from here as a lease needs to be signed with the owner of the apartment/condo, so you can't pre-book before your departure. Plus you need to see the place urself and check for whether things are working or not. So you will have to wait till you get there to get a place. If you already have a friend/relative there, then he can find a decent place for you.
4- It is highly recommended that you look for a fully-furnished, all-included (hot water, cable tv, internet, electricity etc.) accom
5- The university (concordia) itself recommends to rent a hostel room/hotel for one week (i would recommend 2-3 days), so that one can immediately crash there after arrival and during these 2-3 days look for accom and do other stuff like open bank account etc. The hotels and hostel rooms can be booked by a down payment through credit card while you are still in your home country. Here is the link in case you need to book one for cheap;

http://www.hostelworld.com/search?city=Montreal&country=Canada

6- On campus accom is only at the Loyola campus and not the SGW campus, both campuses are 20 min drive apart, but a free shuttle runs between the two campuses time to time. This accom is only for under-grads i think.

All of the above info is my own research from Pakistani seniors in Concordia and from the internet. Hope this will help your brother :)

@ mfm and momi, please add/ correct any info

Well I've done my O levels with 6 A's, 5 B's and A Levels with 4 B's and 1 C. Completed my B.Sc (Hons) in economics and political science from LUMS in 2010 and then joined Standard Chartered as a management trainee.

Worked till July 8th as I had received the medical call as well as due to personal reasons.

I hope i answered your question.

Wow, Packing is the most difficult part, I am worried for it. Can't find warm jeans in the market in this season
Inam,

I really disagree on that point. Maybe its I look at it differently and this is how I've packed:

Winter clothing: not buying anything from Pakistan as none would be made for the temperatures in Canada. Am carrying only what I had already: 1 jacket, a coat from Islamabad (winter's more similar to Canada compared to winters of Karachi) and the warm suit that you can wear underneath all clothes.

Suits: 3 which I can wear for formal events.

Shoes: one pair formal and one pair loafers that I already have. Will buy both again from there, they cost an avg 30$ which is 3000 rupees and they will have better quality that doesn't get ruined within the first 6 months (exp Sputnik footwear)

Warm clothing: everything that I can fit into 46 Kg's apart from all the other stuff.

Jeans: I've got 2 pairs from Levi's which will be enough.

Socks, undergarments and all the rest: grab whatever you have.

Laptop: I'll get a Macbook from Canada for International warranty applicability in case of repair but within a budget of PKR 100K.

Entertainment: one Ps3.

My idea is to grab the bare minimum from Pakistan, which will make do for the first month or so and then re-stock as needed.

Oh and btw, Zainab market has been recommended by lots of friends for winter clothing but unfortunately, they don't have anything related to winters at the moment.

Kindly comment on the above list so that I make sure I ain't forgetting anything.

P.S.: All BS if I don't get the visa now, :)
