Application returned

As an in-Canada applicant to be sponsored by my Canadian wife, I had our application returned to me yesterday after almost two months since sending it out because a form wasn't signed and they wanted the military service details written differently.

The question is, although we were given a case identification number, do we start over now? In other words will it takes them another two months to open the package?

I'm concerned about this given I'm in Canada on a visitor visa which will expire in three months, so if something wrong happens again I don't know what the options will even be.

Am sorry to hear that:(-I can't answer your question however am wondering why the officer didnt just send you a letter asking for another form instead of sending the whole thing back!!-I guess I was lucky that the officer handling my case sent me a letter asking to send a form I had forgotten to sign!-good luck to you and to all of us!

It is unclear how they will take the application when you resend it: As new or from the date you sent it originally.

Make sure you put a top page with case identification number in big letters so that who ever receives it hopefully will put that in the right bin.

I know that you run the risk of having your application returned if forms are unsigned or filled out wrong because they state that in the manual but unsure about the application number changing. I can only assume that this is the number that has been assigned to you and you will likely have to wait a little longer. Just give the call centre a ring and ask. Regarding your visitor visa, you need to extend it and don't wait until the last minute. Extend your visitor visa on the basis of your spousal sponsorship and you will likely get a year extension. Absolutely do not let your status run out. This is a big mistake no matter what anyone on this forum tells you.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that!

I am unsure how this process differs from outland (I'm outland). I also had my package originally returned when I sent it in. My place in queue was not held, and as far as CIC is concerned, my application start date was the second date they received the package. I obviously was freaking out, and I talked to a few representatives. There are quite a few horrid representatives, but there are also some very lovely ones. One of the lovely ones told me to consider writing a 'letter' with my new application (because I had a police certificate expire in the process).

I did write a letter, and the second time around when it was submitted, it was processed faster (half the time) than it was stated to be processed. Whether or not this was pure luck, or they actually read and considered the letter, there is some hope. :)

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the quick answers, everyone.

In case this may help someone else avoid the same issue: Other than the signature on the form what we also had to fix was how the information regarding my military service (I'm Greek, it's mandatory for all male citizens) was listed. Namely, instead of putting something like "Served from Mar 2001 to Oct 2002" along with the details regarding the exact units where I was stationed, I was also supposed to put in that I was not in the army from 1993 to 2001 (1993 being when my 18th birthday was on) as well as from 2002 to present. I.e. we apparently mustn't only put in when we served, but also when we didn't. It seems redundant and a bit too fussy to me, but that's what's required.

We spoke with CIC. What they advised is that we put in the case ID number on the package, but with no guarantees regarding it going up into the queue again with any priority.

As for my penal record from Greece - since at this point it'd be over the three month period since it was issued, and it takes a while to have it reissued - they said I should include a letter in the parcel explaining that since I've been in Canada since October 2012 and I haven't left the country since, the record wouldn't have changed, since the authorities back in my country wouldn't have known anyway even if I had any issues with the law (which I haven't :) ).

Here's to hoping. On one hand I'm kicking myself for missing that signature. On the other it'd have been sent back anyway because of the way the military service was recorded.

Again, thanks for the tips everyone, I appreciate it.

Hi, I advise you to send along an open work permit application with your sponsorship application, and put there "to be processed after AIP" that will give you implied status and once you get AIP (6months) you will be issued an open work permit while you wait for stage 2.
