Application Received... Charged $58?

Hey, all!

My partner and I sent out outland common-law application to CPC-M last week. It arrived on Tuesday June 2nd, and was signed for.

I was just doing to daily online banking today, when I noticed a new charge from CIC on my credit card. It reads:

CPC SCP eCOAACA OTTAWA - $58.70

I have already paid the $1040 application fee, and I'm wondering why / how this fee got charged to me a day after my app was received.

Does anyone have any idea what this means?

I suggest getting in touch with the call centre to verify. It does not make sense that CIC will just charge your card without notice. Besides, any additional fees should be listed on their websire. So it leads me to believe your credit card information may have been stolen.
So tomorrow, call your bank and let them know. Ask them to just put a hold on the card(so it is not charged again) until you can verify with CIC.

If you confirm it is not from CIC, inform your bank immediately(they will refund the money, cancel the card, and issue a new one with a different number). Then also inform both credit bureaus(equifax and TransUnion) that you have been a victim of fraud. They will send you a form to fill out and attach 2 pieces of ID, and proof of address(e.g. a utility bill). They will also send you a copy of your credit report so you can verify if there are any accounts or credit taken out in your name that you are not aware of.

Once you do this, they will place a "fraud alert" notice on your credit profile which stays on for at least 7 years(or for life... I forget now). With this notice, any company that wants to increase your credit limit or issue you a credit card must first send you a letter which you sign and send back, before it happens.

I went through something similar, and had to follow all those steps to protect myself.

Did it cost you that much to mail the application off? CPC SCP eCOAACA OTTAWA - CPC SCP is Canada Post.
