Weere your character ref's full-on letters or jusr contact info for people who agreed to be references??
Yes, my character ref. letters were full on letters in detail stating why I was a good person/held a good job/how long they've known me/why I should be allowed into Canada and whatnot. They also both gave their contact information as well in case their were any problems. I still have not received a confirmation email though which worries me but its also only a day after they should have received it...ooking back at Adams original post its says allow up to 10 business days. Fingers crossed

Okay thanks and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you too!!!! We want to go to Canada in early October but we're still getting all the paperwork together. The timing's gonna make a little antsy for sure.

I wanted to report back on my experience (thus far), as I followed Adam Walden's very helpful advice in the post above. I am getting married in B.C. and two of my family members who are coming from the U.S. have DUIs. One DUI is six years old, the other individual's is 4 years old. Neither involved any injuries, jail time, or property damage. Both persons paid all their fines and completed classes and probation terms.

We sent in the TRP applications, character reference letters, all documentation showing completion of sentence, printed out the equivalent Canada law, proof of the application fee paid online, copies of passports and driver's licenses, all exactly as advised by Adam. We just sent in copies, not originals. I sent them by overnight mail to the Canadian Consulate in LA, also as Adam advised, and they received it on June 1, 2018. I had not heard anything as of June 26, so I sent an inquiry via email to lngls@international.gc.ca. I didn't get a response, but I'm not sure if that was the right email address to use because today, July 9, I received an email from <LNGLSQuestions@international.gc.ca> saying that all that was needed to finalize was evidence of the wedding. So I emailed in to that address copies of the invitation, the RSVPs, and my venue confirmation. I received an automated acknowledgment from that email address. I am hopeful now that we are going to get approval, hopefully via email, as the wedding is July 22, and the flights are scheduled to depart on July 18.

I screwed up by waiting so long, I went back and forth on whether to hire an attorney to do it, but it was very expensive, and given Adam's experience I decided to chance it myself, and assuming everything continues to proceed smoothly, I'm glad I did, but I definitely advise getting it in much sooner than I did. We decided if we had not heard back in time, that we just were going to hand carry the applications and all documentation to the border and apply there if needed and hope for the best. Obviously that is a stress that we really hope to avoid.

I did not bother getting FBI or state clearances.

I will update as to how/when/if we get final approval. But thanks again to Adam for the very helpful post as so far it appears to be working out well.
Hey, did you get an update on your case?

A follow up to my above report. We received both of the TRP approvals in email on July 16, the day before the boys’ scheduled departure! I was very relieved. Both boys showed their approval letters, as instructed, to the border agents on arrival and they were taken aside for a few minutes to a secondary area and asked a few questions and then allowed to enter.

Regarding the character references, no, it’s not like a job application, they won’t contact anyone for you, you need detailed reference letters. I strongly advise people to include a clear and sincere narrative of the circumstances of the incident, any steps taken toward rehabilitation, etc. if you had a DUI and you don’t plan to drive while in Canada, include that info also.

Morning All,

I would love to get a definitive answer to this question. So I would appreciate all the help I can get on this one.

I recently got my TRP application approved for my specified travel dates.
Do I also need to apply for a TRV to accompany my TRP on my journey?

Many thanks in advance.

It depends on what country you’re traveling from. You generally don’t need a visa if you’re from the US.

There’s a simple two question questionnaire you can fill out on the CA gov website to determine if you need a visa.

This is great to know! Curious...When did you send your's in? & did you get a confirmation email? I sent mine in last Friday 7/6 & UPS says it would arrive in LA on Tuesday 7/10, I have not received confirmation via email yet & i included a cover letter and everything. Im hoping to head to Canada in November for my wife's nieces wedding.. I included FBI reports but not state clearance (only certificate of disposition-not sure if thats the same thing considered in NY) I included all my other proof of completing sentence as well, character ref's/wedding info etc.
The application was received on June 1 (per USPS tracking) and we got approval on July 16. We did NOT get any kind of a confirmation email or letter when the applications were received. I didn’t hear from them at all for over a month, when I got the email asking for evidence of the wedding.

We did not do any FBI or state clearance reports.

Thank you Sharkmaid.
I probably should have added that i'm not from a Visa exempt Country and that my TRV application was refused prior to applying for the TRP.

Ah. I would think that the answer would be yes then (now that you have a TRP I would think that should ease the way for the TRV) but I would just contact them and ask.

Glad that you got it approved! Do you mind sharing your timeline and where you’re from? Did you apply in the US?

I also believe that you would have to apply for a TRV since the TRP is not a visa but rather a document that lets you overcome your inadmisability.

Hey all, so we sent off my husband's TRP application today. I'm glad we got it all done but I'll be waiting with tingly anticipation until we hear back. Here's what we had:

- Cover letter/table of contents
- Application form (with 2 passport-style photos of my husband)
- Fee receipt
- Husband's passport & driver's license photocopies
- His personal statements
- FBI check
- State police check
- Court document showing his nine-month sentence to attend NA/AA meetings and his 17 day community service sentence
- Court document showing his fee payment plan for his DUI program
- Certificates of completion for his NA/AA meetings and community service hours
- Court document showing his second DUI was dismissed
- Character letters from me and a colleague
- My passport photocopy (I'm a Canadian citizen who's about to become an American permanent resident)
- Our marriage certificate photocopy
- Photocopies of our notices for my American green card application (to help prove our trip to Canada is most definitely temporary)

It involved a lot of digging through my husband's files. He even called his old lawyer, who unfortunately dropped the ball on him very badly. She completely stopped communicating with him during the court proceedings. Eventually she called him back and apologized for disappearing because the reason for her sudden absence was she had gotten married. Needless to say, my husband was pissed at her and stopped using her after that. But for the sake of this application, he called her again and she was able to give us some of the old paperwork. Will post updates as they happen. Thanks to everyone in this thread for sharing their experiences!!!

Thanks for the reply & sorry for the late response. Yeah, I never got a confirmation email so i just emailed them and got an automated one back saying the processing times. Its been about a month now so I'm just checking emails closely everyday. Thanks again
