Application for proof of Canadian Citizenship for minor born outside of Canada

My son was born outside of Canada on May 2024. I applied online for his Canadian Certificate of Citizenship as I became a Canadian Citizen myself after July 2009.

Application was submitted on the 28th of June 2024. UCI received approx. 5 months later. Its been around 8 months now and there is no movement whatsoever in the application and no response from the IRCC when I contact them through the webform. Normal processing time for online applications is around 3-4 Months as per IRCC portal.

Any idea what the problem could be? Even if I am not eligible to apply online the IRCC would have let us know that by now right? Any guidance please help.

We need to move back to Canada in April this year and if we dont receive the proof of certificate of citizenship by then, can we apply for a temporary passport for my son to travel to Canada?

Yes. I'd go and do it now though, no need to wait.

Alright will apply for a temp passport urgent. However, can you provide any insight into why the delay from CIC and no communication either? Is it normal occurrence for proof of citizenship online applications these days?

I cannot, no. In most cases for those abroad I suggest they get in touch with consular section and apply for the proof of citizenship and temp passport at same time. (They issue these on basis of presumed citizenship i.e. because parentage and citizenship of parent clear).

Have a friend going through the process. Her child is 10 months and no passport in sight.

Nothing. Applied at age 4-8 weeks. Child is a US citizen and has only crossed the land border and no plans to go abroad other than Canada so just waiting since not a huge issue. Very straight forward case. Only parent is Canadian and has spent most of her life in Canada. Parent’s documents and child’s all in English and easily verifiable as Canadian and US.
