Application for citizenship for 6 month year old

I'm getting confused with information on the checklist and information I'm reading online about this process. I"m a Male Canadian by birth and my Son was Born in the Philippines. I have his long form birth Certificate and deed of legitimation of a natural child form. I also have my wife and mines Marriage contract. I believe this is all the information I need. What I'm confused about the 2 pieces of personal identification. Since my son is only 6 months old he has none are they looking for two pieces of my ID even though it's for his Citizenship. I know I also have to send the application in the Philippines as well since this is where he lives. Section 7 is asking for address information. should I put mine or the address where he is staying. Any outlining of this process would help me as I'm going to submit paper work for her to come to Canada soon and need his passport ASAP.

What to include
1) Both pages of the application form completed and signed within the last 12 months, and certified by the guarantor;
2) Two (2) identical passport photos of the child, one certified by the guarantor;
3) Proof of Canadian citizenship (original only);
4) Proof of parentage;
5) The required fees;
Any valid Canadian passport or travel document issued in the name of a child;
Proof of legal guardianship, if applicable; and

Section 7 is asking for address information. should I put mine or the address where he is staying.

1) Complete and Sign the application form & certify by guarantor
2) Take 2 photos as per specifications & certify by guarantor - one - back side
3) & 4) Certificate of registration of birth abroad - original
For children, the child's foreign birth certificate that indicates the name(s) of the parent(s) should also be included as proof of parentage.
5) Pay the fee

I understand that he is a Canadian Citizen at birth but I was under the understanding that in order for him to come to Canada he would need to be certified first then apply for passport which you could do almost at the same time. If I were to get him a passport only would they not ask for Citizenship Certificate at some point entering into Canada?

Looking at http://passport.gc.ca/form/pdfs/pptc042.pdf (Child Abroad General Passport Application), it does look like you have to provide a "Certificate of Birth in Canada" or "Certificate of Canadian citizenship".

According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/proof.asp (Application for a citizenship certificate): If you are applying for of a minor, remember that the questions apply to the minor.

Applying for a Canadian Citizenship and a Citizenship certificate are two different things. In the first case is you are not a Canadian and want to become a naturalized citizen of Canada where as the second one you are already a Canadian citizen but need a proof for your citizenship.

For the latter case procedure for passport is different in different countries. In continental Americas (USA and Canada) it seems easy to process/travel through this but many other countries the requirements are different.

In short, either you can apply for certificate of citizenship and once you get it, apply for passport with it or use the urgent process, approved on merit, before receiving it.


I am/my child is unable to present my/my child's original proof of Canadian citizenship. How can I get a passport to travel?

Proof of Canadian citizenship is required to support each passport application, except if you are eligible for the Adult Passport Renewal Application process.
We highly recommend that you submit an application for proof of citizenship as soon as possible following:
The birth of your child outside Canada, or
If your proof of citizenship is lost, stolen or damaged.
The application for proof of citizenship can be a lengthy process and we urge you to submit the application as soon as possible. If possible, you should consider deferring all travel plans until the certificate is received from the Processing Center in Canada.

Following submission of the citizenship application, if travel plans cannot be deferred, you may submit a fully completed passport application along with all supporting documentation as well as your/your child's proof of travel, such as a confirmed and paid itinerary or an airline ticket, and the receipt confirming submission of the proof of citizenship application as supporting documentation to assess the case. Our passport examiners will assess your case and determine the necessity of issuing a limited validity passport to meet you/your child's travel needs.

For new born children who have not been issued any proof of citizenship, the proof of Canadian citizenship from one of the parents is required in addition to all other supporting documents. Please note that a Limited Validity Passport can only be issued to children aged below two (2) years old who have no proof of Canadian citizenship.

The Embassy requests to see government issued photo identification of both parents for child applications. For this reason, if applying in person, both parents should bring identification with them. If applying by mail, parents should enclose original or *copies of their identification to avoid delays in processing.

Documents to support your identity must be valid, must be issued by a federal, provincial, territorial or municipal authority in Canada or local equivalent, and must include your name and signature.

*Copies are acceptable provided your guarantor has signed and dated a copy of each document (both sides) confirming that the original document has been seen.

Certificates of Registration of Birth Abroad haven't been issued since 1977. Nowadays, a child born abroad to a Canadian parent needs to apply for a Certificate of Citizenship.
