Chances are basically nil unless you are in the top of your field. For example, there was a position at my university for exactly the thing I am doing for my research. I could not apply because I have not finished yet. There were two candidates for the job. One was from Standford the other one from Harvard. Having said that, chances increase if you go to smaller universities or colleges. I have not met a single person in the last 6 years that graduated from Canada and who also got a tenure track position in a Canadian University. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, but it is rare enough.

Hi everyone,

I am preparing the PR application under the PhD stream. My basic information is: I have got 23 points from my ECA (master's level), 23 from IELTS, 12 from age and 9 from TA/RA experience ( I have roughly TA/RA 1900 hours in total written in reference letters). This adds up to exactly 67 points.

Could anyone kindly answer me some questions?

1) I don't plan to include any family members in my PR application and I'm single. Does this mean I can leave empty the "dependent section" in the form "Generic Application Form for Canada (IMM 0008)" and I needn't complete "Additional Dependants/Declaration Form (IMM 0008DEP)" ?

2) My PhD program is in progress, do I need to include the completed years of PhD education in question 7 (education) of "Schedule A: Background / Declaration (IMM 5669)"? I guess so?

3) I had approximately 1700 hours of TA/RA at UBC, however the workload is not at 30 hours/week and thus not full-time. Can I check YES at Question 9a) in " Federal Skilled Worker (IMM 0008 – Schedule 3)" ? I think this question is related to adaptability score. If I check NO, I will for sure not receive the 10 points from Canadian work experience. If I check yes, I may receive the 10 points. Or maybe I can receive 5 points for studying in Canada? The concern is that I didn't do "15 hours of classes per week:.

4) For question 12 in " Federal Skilled Worker (IMM 0008 – Schedule 3)", since I only had TA/RA work experience, I think I should use NOC 4012. However, the space of "Occupation" blank is not big enough to put "Post-secondary teaching and research assistants", is it good to put "University TA/RA"?

5) Silly question, I don't have a common-law partner, so I don't need to complete "Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union (IMM 5409)" ?

Thanks very much for anyone's valuable time and help.

It seems that completeness check for September applicant has been finished and they are checking October applicants against completeness. The overall cap according to what CIC has told to one of the applicants is based on the completeness check. Right now the overall cap is 227 and my estimation is around 400 as of today (considering non-completeness checked applications). It means that if you have not applied yet, you have still chance to be in the cap.

One more important news: according to what I saw in FSW2014 forum, the last day of receiving applications by CIO is Friday December 19th. They will close from Monday December 22nd and will open on Monday January 5th.
Ohh that means I should apply ASAP. I am in the final stretch. Almost have everything ready. Hoping to get the last two work experience letter today, and then I will do a completeness check this evening. Will do one more check tomorrow and then will send it out !

My friend did his Ph.D from a Canadian university and he got hired in a tenure track position in the same university. And this is one of the top 3 canadian univs. So it does happen, but pretty rare though.

Hi Five for UBC ! I am applying from UBC too and have almost all these same questions as well. I just took some decisions for these so far.

1) I removed the section for dependents in the generic form. And I didn't fill the form for addition dep.
4) I Put "Teaching, Research Assitant", but your idea sounds better
5) No you don't need it AFAIK.

Thanks. That's good. I would be happy even if i get in any smaller university of college unless it is related to my field.

One more questions: Do we need any kind of certification etc to teach in University/College? I belong to CS field

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but this forum's title is "Applicants from PhD program after 5 Nov, 2011 connect here to get status". Perhaps there are more relevant threads for job market discussions.

Hello friends, just want to share my recent landing experience with you. I received our passports back on Oct. 30. Apparently I wasn’t doing anything after that as my wife is still in my home country. (I was planning to go back during Christmas so that we could land together at the airport on our way back to Canada.) However, on Nov. 14, I received an email from the local CIC office in my city asking me whether I am available to attend the landing interview at their downtown office within next 2 weeks. It was very surprising to me because they initiated the correspondence (I did not call CIC to setup an appointment.) However, I felt that I should comply with them and agreed to attend the landing interview on Nov. 20.

My landing experience was very pleasant at that office. The CIC officer and all other staffs around were very polite, friendly and helpful. The officer congratulated me for becoming a PR. In fact she is also an immigrant from UK, so we shared some of our common stories. I took bank statements, employment letter from the university, newly taken pictures, permits but she did not want to check the documents. But she took the new photos and double-checked the mailing address with me. After signatures, she kept the CPR with my photo and returned me the one without my photo. She advised me to keep that CPR in a very secure place (but not to laminate) because it will be required when we apply for citizenship later. She also confirmed that the accompanying spouse can land later at the airport but I have to wait until I receive the PR card to travel outside Canada. She gave me a rough idea that it will take 19 business days but also asked me to check processing time in CIC website.

So my suggestion to those who are going to land in future is that: you might want to contact the CIC office in your city first (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/offices/help.asp). You can go to them with your passport & CPR and ask for an appointment. Alternately you can call up CIC call centre (1-888-242-2100) or email them (question@cic.gc.ca) to make an appointment. I know the common knowledge is that it takes a long time to set up a CIC landing appointment. But if you are lucky like my case or successful to manage an early appointment, then you can save some bucks on car rent/gas to go to the nearest border. At least it does not hurt to try this way first. I also think that inland landing is much easier and there is a very low possibility of facing rough experience or long waits like border landing. Thought this will throw a new idea to your plans. Many congrats to all of those who recently received MR & RPRF requests ;D. Good luck to you all who are waiting for MR and PPR :).

Hi Pepe,

Oh yeah! AOR, not appl. filed ! However it was the 26th that my lawyer got it.
P.S. I had a special case for my previous work experience that's why I hired them.
