They won't send an email. You would have to check CIC everyday in you want to figure out when exactly there is an update on your application.

I would say Yes! In May 14th my application entered into 6th month (completed 5 months) i checked in the morning nothing was changed then checked in the noon nothing was changed but after finished my work i reached home i check i found it was changed to BG in process.
