It can be quite cold in the winter, like upto minus 40 (with windchill) during the coldest winters. So all winter-related stuff is essential. But if you've never lived in a cold country before, I suggest you buy your winter jacket from Canada. They can be pricey though - a good one between 100 - 300 dollars, but will last you for a long time.

It really depends on what you believe to be essential.

A warm coat, good gloves and boots are a good idea for the winter, there are plenty of places to buy those items.

Food, well there are loads of places to eat and plenty of locations that sell a wide range of ingredients.
