Thank you all.

This issue has severly beat me down, as I am worried that my sponsorship may be rejected because of it :'(. I contacted our accoutant who did my taxes, and he is writing me a letter today to send to them, regarding the error. The question is, should I send it to Warsaw or Missassauga, as they just got my application package on August 12th? I only have a receipt number right now.

I am also submitting the form for the marital status change, and the adjustment form as well, to the government. I hope Revenue Canada can proccess those both ASAP, so that I can send a new Option C to Warsaw (probably) at that time.

Hope everything works out. You will need to send the letter to Mississuaga since that is where they assess the sponsor. According to the timelines, they are processing applications received up to July 21st. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/canada/process-in.asp

thats great that your accountant is writing the letter, if you already sent them an option C then the letter is all you need. They took months to make the adjustment so we got fed up and submitted it with the original option c with the error and the letter and we never sent them the fixed version and i was still approved as a sponsor, so just the letter should be fine, otherwise you will be waiting forever.

so my suggestion is just send the letter and it should be fine, thats what i did and everything was ok

hope this helps!

You should refile you taxes, as there is monetary benefit for claiming your partner if they were here with you and earned no income.

Hi tgchi13!

This sounds interesting, can you please provide a link with more information about this?

Thanks!

My Option C must have said 'divorced' as that was my 2008 tax status, but we were approved nonetheless. I was never questioned about this, and honestly I didn't even really look at my Option C. Interestingly enough, since we got married in Nov. 2009, for my 2009 taxes I called the International Tax Branch and was told to file as 'Separated' for the year, as my husband was in another country and we were not living together. They said we would be considered 'separated' by distance (not necessarily true 'marital status' per se) as my husband is a foreign national and was neither being supported by me nor supporting me.

I'm sorry but how long had your accountant been practicing in Canada?? Separated by distance is not recognized as separated by CRA. There is another section of the tax return that addressed the location of your partner/spouse.

It wasn't an accountant that gave me that information. It came directly from CRA (International/Foreign Taxation Branch or something along those lines).

We got married in Aug 2008 I came home did a status change for Child tax credit to married and when I filed in 2009 for the yr 2008 filed under married. I was told by a un-named tax preparer to file single. UMMM no there is a question "did your marital status change and when?"

I can't for the life of me remember how to upload an image:

If any one can recall the easy way I will include the sections from the return.

EDIT: upload from Mac

Okay, since no one else can recall how to upload the images I'll delete them and move on.

Good luck!
