Hi all,

I was just wondering whether anyone else has sent in their Option C printout saying 'Single' along with their application package. Any thoughts on this??

Thanks for your answers in advance!

Hi Paris!

I asked the same question earlier! But I don't know if this is the situation for everyone. We got married on 2010, and since the last taxation year is 2009 and my husband was single by then, this information seems correct and we'll just send it like that.

Hope this helps!

I got married in August of 2009, and my Option C says single. I just sent my application a couple of weeks ago. Funny thing is, my tax accountant was also my minister of oaths/notary public for my wedding! Ha-ha. Sould I send a new one in after changing my marital status with CRA?

If you got married in august 2009 then your tax return for the 2009 tax year should say single. plus, declaring your marriage to govt bodies is a good way to show proof of your relationship

YES I DID BY ACCIDENT! I tried to have revenue canada change it but they took months! So i got my accountant to write a letter (he was the one who did it) stating that it was his mistake, stating that he submitted the change to rev canada and that we really were married. They accepted the letter and i was approved as a sponsor, so there were no problems.

I tried to get Revenue Canada to change my marital status one year too and they told me to it's OK and I didn't have to change it. My account had said we were common law when we weren't quite yet for that tax year. They just said since we are common law now, to just leave it at that.

My wife filed her taxes as single as we married in Jan 2010, so it was ok for 2009

I am so confused now ???

I had sent them my latest Option C (which I ordered in July, a month ago). Would this have been for the 2008 or 2009 year (2010?) and should it have said single on it, as I was married in August of 2009?

I am sorry for all of the questions, as you can probably tell, I don't know much about this and am freaking out. Unfortunately I don't have the papers here to look at...

Thanks again :-[

if you filed taxes this year for the 2009, then the 2009 one would have been your latest Option C. If it was for the 2009 tax year then it should have said married.

That is not correct. This is a two-part consideration as there is the explicit request and opportunity to note a change in marital status.

So how best should I proceed with sending a new Option C (with my status as changed to "married") to CPC-M? Or, should I just wait until my sponsorship gets approved and everything is sent to Warsaw? However, is there the possibility that they may not even approve me as the sponsor due to this?

I will first have to fill out and send the Marital Change form (RC 65) with Revenue Canada, and I am not certain as to how long it will take them to make the change in my file and give me a new Option C printout with my status changed to "married."

My application was received by CPC-M on Aug. 12 (tracked through Canada Post). I think that the wait time right now is 42 days over there. So far, I only have my receipt number, and no case or file numbers.

Should I try to get my accountant to also write a letter declaring the discrepancy and that we are actually married, and just send that off for now? He was the minister of oaths at our wedding...

Please help!

The proper thing to do would be to refile your taxes with the correct information. And do so immediately.

You wouldn't have to refile your taxes you would just have to send in a form changing your marital status. We just became common law in Deceember of 09 so technically I was still considered divorced. I hope it won't be a huge problem that I filed as divorced as it was honestly a mistake.

You should refile you taxes, as there is monetary benefit for claiming your partner if they were here with you and earned no income.
