Your friend knows it is not part of SFU, but is Private College "associated to SFU" S/he should also know that only persons in the Associate of Arts Program get Off Campus Work Permits or PGWPs.

I applied for Phd Computer Science. Just finished my msc from Universityof Nottingham (not sure if it matters) with a merit (next to distinction i.e 2:1). Am not really sure of my chances. And I av three journal publication and a book. What do u think are my chances of being accepted?

Not really sure about the phd program , you should apply to other uni's as backup.
Simon Fraser is not the hardest university to get into for masters & Phd. You seem to have good PG scores and well
published. Is simon fraser your first choice?
