Haha yep. I cried when I got the email (we put me as the representative so I would get the mail). My parents were like, what's wrong?!? It wasnt expected at all! Although I did expect our process to be pretty simple since we were together 4.5 years before getting married and I lived in DR for 3 years prior to our getting married and had just moved back to Canada and submitted the papers.

I hope everyone has as smooth of a process as we did!
I think ours will be fairly simple too. We were together 3 years before we got married, and I lived there for almost 2 years.

fingers crossed!!

Hello,

Nice to see some SD applicants! I just wanted to share my recent experience with the SD visa office and the whole process in general. We sent our package to CIC Mississauga mid-June 2014. The file was received in SD on Sept. 2nd. My husband then got called for his interview mid-November. This was no surprise to us- my husband's previous marriage had raised a red flag, so it was no surprise to us! 3 weeks after the interview we reveived the passport request (longest 3 weeks of my life!!!). Without the interview he probably would have been approved in November.

Anyways, I found the visa office to be fine to deal with and very quick. They promptly responded to emails and there were really no hiccups throughout the entire process. My husband landed January 2015 and it's great to not have to think about immigration and not constantly waiting for this email or that email. Like Tink23 said, once it's all over it doesn't seem like it was that bad to begin with!!! I wish you guys a speedy process!!!

Hey I am Canadian working on sponsoring my Dominican husband. We applied in March. We are hoping all our papers are in order. We worked on a large portion while I was down in Dominican, then I completed the rest once I arrived back in Canada. We are hoping that we didn't miss anything. I am more worried that the portion of the process done in Santo Domingo will take the longest. My husband is far more calmer than me, but then again he's Dominican as just generally more chill than me. I find it comforting to review this site as I realize there a tons of people in our position awaiting news. Anyway, just wanted to say hi.
Welcome 2worlds1love
I applied in October, so it's going on 6 months. The waiting is killing me, but I think this new Express Entry program really slowed things down for family class applicants. But everyday that goes by is a day closer to us being together. And Tink23 that is crazy you got through in 3 months. Good luck to everybody waiting. And glad to hear your story MissEliza! I hope your husband is adjusting well!

Thanks tink23 and Lalala I'm trying to be optimistic. I don't expect three months, but I'm optimistic for a possible 6-9month wait. Still early to say really. I will feel a little less anxious once I hear that our application is in order just to be reviewed. I'm paranoid we forgot something or did something wrong... I pray everything's okay.

I was really paranoid as well that we forgot something! I was convinced Mississauga was going to send our entire package back but low and behold, everything was complete and in good order. I hope your process goes fast fast fast. Your husband will be here before you know it and this waiting will be a distant memory! Let us know when you get Sponsorship Approval. I think it's around a 2 month wait right now. Good luck!!

Hey guys,

So as we are waiting for any news, I started thinking more about once my husband arrives to Canada and things we would have to ensure we follow up on. One things that came to mind was the transferring of his Dominican Republic Drivers license to an Ontario drivers license. Does anyone have any experience in this? How difficult was it to obtain and how long did the process take? I was reading on one of the Ontario site that we require the following:

"If your licence is from a country that is not in the list above (DOMINICAN WAS NOT LISTED), you must present official, written confirmation of your driving experience.

Written confirmation is an original letter from the original licensing agency (such as the ministry of transportation in your country or state), or from the Embassy, Consulate, or High Commissioner's offices representing the country.

The letter must be:

Written on official letterhead
Written in English or French - If it is written in another language, you must submit a letter of translation from a qualified translator.
Dated - It cannot be more than 6 months old.

This letter must include information about:

The date first licensed
Licence expiry date
Class of licence
That the licence was valid for the relevant period of time for the purposes of exchange and experience"

Is this it? Or is there other information we need to know before we proceed. Obviously this won't be an issues immediately as we are still awaiting his immigration paperwork and so on, but I personally want to be organized once he gets here so we can get him settled in easily and ready for the Canadian lifestyle.

Thoughts???

This is a great question. This is one of the things I was inquiring about. I just came back from the Dominican a week ago and one thing we learned while there (from the Canadian consulate) was that my husband will need to be licensed for at least two years in the Dominican to even get a G class Ontario drivers license (otherwise he would have to start at G1). So while I was there we got his license renewed, he had lost his. That's all I was told, I was never told about the letter you are referring to, but you are most likely correct, I go back in May so I will inquire further about this.

My husband didn't have a license there, so we didn't go through this, but from what I understand for those who did, your husband will need to get a letter stating is length of driving in DR as well as his driving record. This, I believe will need to be legalized. It will need to be translated. I'm not sure if it will need to be presented at the Dominican consulate in Canada?

Once everything is approved or done correctly, your husband will have to present it to the ministry of transportation. He will have to write the g1 test, and when passed he can go right away to do the g2 driving test, and if he has enough driving experience in DR he will be able to go right away and complete his G test for the complete license (this is in Ontario, and if you're in another province the same will happen for whatever they call their levelled tests).

Having his license in DR won't allow him to by pass any of the driving tests here in Canada, but it will allow him to by pass the waiting periods between tests. He will, however, still have to pass each test.

My husband is currently studying for his G1 written test. He had a full Driver's License in DR in which he has more than 2 years driving experience on. Once he passes his G1 written test, he can take his G1 exit road test right away and doesn't have to wait (as Tink mentioned). This will give him a full license, although I'm not sure if that means G2 or G. I'll have to call about that!! Anyways, we called the Dominican consulate here in Toronto and they just need his DR drivers license in order to write the official letter that the ministry of transportation requires, confirming the validity of the license and that he has more than 2 years of driving experience. They will also translate it into English. The fee they charge for the letter and translation is $40 USD. We will probably bring his DR passport and PR card to the consulate as well as his DR license, just to be safe!

Hope that helps!!!

This link is really helpful too: http://www.drivetest.ca/EN/licencing/Pages/Out-of-Country-Drivers.aspx

Looks like even if they have more than 2 years driving experience, they will get a full G licence when they past the road test :)

Hi everyone, good to see few ppl from the DR are active.

I just received the first email after I sent my app, giving me my ucl number and saying they have received the app. So I have a question, in case there was any docs missing will I still receive another email or letter saying that any doc is missing? Or they should have said that in that email? In case there's something missing will I now through email or letter? Does anybody knows about this?

Thank you, also thank you for sharing your experience it really helps for the nerves
