Hi,

Is there anyone in Canada on a temporary worker's permit?

1. If so, what is the duration of your work permit? e.g. 1 or 2 years?
2. What is the duration of the health insurance that you purchased when entering Canada?

My work permit is 2 years but the maximum duration of insurance that I can find is 1 year. I just wanted to know in your circumstance, if the port of entry officer reduced the duration of your work permit for having insurance cover that did not coincide with the length of your work permit.

I've heard from sources that 'it's okay' and I've heard from others that the P.O.E officer may need to reduce the duration of the visa. Thats why I'm asking for real-life examples today.

Unless you are getting an IEC (working holiday visa)in most provinces on a closed work permit, you will be eligible for Provincial Health Insurance after 3 months, 3 you are eligible from day 1.

The Provincial Health Insurance Program requires the individual to work full-time, which is certainly my intention, to be eligable for coverage. However, I think it comes down to the perspective of my government (Australian) to what is reliable insurance coverage. Namely, what if I am unemployed or cannot find full time work and injure myself? The gov't may not deem Provincial insurance to be acceptable as it is not guaranteed. But hopefully I can try to convince the port of entry officer because its impossible to find 2 years insurance. Secondly, I am eligable for Provincial Health Insurance after 3 months and hopefully the officer will overlook the full-time employment aspect.

Came to Canada on a 1 yr working holiday myself. Entered Canada with insurance valid for six months(would be able to extend this online) as I didn't know if I'd want to stay the full year. Before leaving I had phoned the Canadian embassy regarding this and was told it was no problem, so long as I extended when my insurance was about to run out if at that point I was still in Canada.
The officer never asked anything about my insurance at the point of entry though.

Thanks for the reply. Fingers crossed the POE officer doesn't ask for my insurance details.

Which country are you from?

I also read your other post in relation to the LMO. You mentioned that your position is retail. I wish everything in your favour since I am on the same 'boat' as you are but what is the likelihood of being successfully granted a LMO for a retail position? Doesn't the position have to be so unique and specialized that the employer cannot find a suitable Canadian to fill the position that the employer will be granted an LMO?

I think it should be fine in any case. They would be aware of this issue I'm sure, so they'd understand, especially since you do intend to sign up for health insurance as soon as your eligible.
I'm Danish btw. And yes, in regards to the LMO, it's not easy and we had the first LMO denied but we re-applied and currently waiting on a decision. My employer has been quite helpful and really wants to keep me as we get along really well, so that helps too. There's different skill level categories, so you can apply under skill level c/d if the employer is willing to sponsor, but if you want to apply for permanent residency then retail isn't a great choice. That's not my intention so I'm good, but I do want to stay for another year or so.
Isn't a cakewalk though and now it's a little complicated as I just received my refusal letter from CIC so I have to also apply for restoration of status which can take up to two months, I'm hoping I might be able to do this at the border.
