I quarantined for 14 days in September when I returned from the states (at an Air BNB) and am prepared to do so again, but it would be nice if there was some accommodation for those who have received full vaccines and have documentation to prove it. I think a negative Covid test, then quarantine for a week, then another negative test would be sufficient?
I'm not mad about the quarantine. Quarantining at an air-bnb for 2 weeks was A-OK with me.

The >2000$ per person fee for 3 days for 3 people, though. That seems excessive.

Isnt it like $2k per person for 3 days?

Trudeau said "it is expected it will be more than two thousand dollars" per person. Apologies if I was unclear - I didn't mean the fee was per day. But, you only get 3 days of hotel service for that.

In my case, a couple and an infant, it's something along the lines of 6-7K to house us for 3 days. Close to half the rental budget of a whole year. I doubt the infant is placing an undue hardship on either the space requirements of the hotel room, or the security, or the food, since we're still breastfeeding.

It's a tough pill to swallow from our government after more than a year of doing our best to return to Canada.

The vaccine is ~95% effective at preventing people from catching Covid. It pretty much means I don't have Covid, actually.

Furthermore, the % of people on the clinical trial who tested positive for Covid without symptoms after receiving the vaccine was 0.1% - one in a thousand. And those might have been false positives.
We have no idea what level of protection vaccines have against known and unknown mutations.

It was intended to deter canadians from travelling abroad. Family members coming to Canada shouldn't be forced to spent 2 000 for 3 days in hotel if they have a quarantine plan that will cost them almost nothing. That would be a very dishonest move by the government
Family members can also bring in covid and especially the new mutations of covid so it isn’t all about Canadians going on vacation. There is no dishonesty by the government and many governments worldwide have similar systems. Would expect that you’ll be paying the 2k.

Official: https://www.canada.ca/en/transport-canada/news/2021/01/government-of-canada-introduces-further-restrictions-on-international-travel.html

As soon as possible in the coming weeks, all air travellers arriving in Canada, with very limited exceptions, must reserve a room in a Government of Canada-approved hotel for three nights at their own cost, and take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival at their own cost. More details will be available in the coming days.

But I agree with @armoured that it will change. Hoping everything eases out by Mar-Apr
Personally can’t see any changes until enough people are vaccinated in Canada. If anything more and more countries are limiting who can enter.

I think it's different for land crossing. I'm hoping to drive across, have the ArriveCan app filled out, then proceed to my apartment in Vancouver. They did call me multiple times during my last quarantine to check on me....

I was going to fly.

I imagine many will land in the US and rent a car - if renting a car is less than 2000$, or more if they're a group, they'll come up ahead. Once a few news stories of people doing just that come out, I imagine restrictions on land borders will increase as well.

This is dishonest, because they want to profit from it. It is not ethical to force people to pay for something they don't need. Many people have arranged a quarantine place that will be much cheaper..But it is understandable because all governments around the world are known for abusing power for centuries and they slowly want to take people's rights away.

The governments have the power to introduce ridiculous and abusive rules. ..all these covid restrictions cause many more problems than covid itself

There will be added testing requirements for land crossings (already require quarantine). At airports they can make people get onto buses to go to hotels....whereas I think for people driving across there won't be the same hotel requirements... https://www.canada.ca/en/transport-canada/news/2021/01/government-of-canada-introduces-further-restrictions-on-international-travel.html
The Government of Canada will introduce a 72-hour pre-arrival testing requirement (molecular test) for travellers seeking entry in land mode, with limited exceptions such as commercial truckers. In addition, we continue to collaborate with partners in the United States to strengthen our border measures and keep our countries safe.

For now. Wait until the news report on people circumventing the 2000$ hotels by driving through the border, and watch it change soon after.

Oh well....what will be, will be. I had no choice but to go to the states and I will have to return to BC driving my personal vehicle, probably in early March. I will have been fully vaccinated, but if they make me go to a hotel....after testing and vaccine, so be it.

The government won’t be profiting from this. If anything the government is going to spend quite a bit of money between the hotel quarantine, test and more thorough follow-up. If people had quarantined alonein their homes and there had been no issues the government wouldn’t have implemented this. Canada could of put in these requirements 10 months ago and many provinces had been asking for months for more regulations.

Everyone has already thought of this. Would imagine they are still negotiating with the US and figuring out how to quarantine people arriving through land borders.
