Hi everyone ,

I am from Egypt and I am applying for Canadian study permit. I would like to ask you guys about the process time. It's says in that it takes 4 to 6 weeks , and another 20 days will be added for some nationalities . Did this 20 days applied to anyone here ? And of I am applying for the 2nd time will it be also be added ?

Hey Ali,

Kindly clear this query. Do I have to submit my cancelled or expired passports? Is it really necessary?
The below link doesn't say so. But I feel like I read it somewhere.
The thing is I don't have it with me right now and it's in my home country.

I am applying for my visa this Monday.

Kindly advise.

Regards

You don't have to submit your passport. Just submit the copies of the passports (new and old both, all pages). I only submitted the copies of my all three passports. When the permit was approved, they only asked for the valid passport (latest one). They will not ask for the old passports. Do attach the copies of your old passports to avoid any confusion and delay.

I don't think I can have my passports delivered to my country of residence in kuwait in such short time. I guess I have to go forward with what I have.

I wonder why it says "if applicable" .. Although I've had 4 passports, all expired with cancelled visas (UAE) on it, the current one was taken 10 years ago and shows all my recent travels (including the past five years history asked for specifically mentioned in the IMM 1294E form)..

As of now I've but no option to go by what I have in hand and produce the old passports, if requested.

I'm an indian staying in Kuwait with my parents and my old passports are all in my home country.

There are quite a many links to follow and it's really misleading,

http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/uae-eau/visas/53_1.aspx?lang=eng

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5483E.pdf

Nothing about the passport is mentioned in the latter and this is the one I followed as advised by VFS Kuwait, but then calling them up and asking a query didn't prove as useful because all they had to say was to follow the checklist as given in their site.

Regards.

I don't think you would be notified when they've added the additional processing days. Example, If the VO is done assessing your documents after four weeks, he will then automatically add 20+ more days to do background checks and related actions, and after all these is the only time when he will tell you if your application is approved or rejected.

Do students require a TRV Visa?

Generally, yes. That's what's first required to enter Canada. You will only get your study permit once you've already landed in Canada, from the officer at POE. :)

What I meant is, do I have to fill the form Temporary Resident Visa in the Checklist? I find the info so misleading,

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/student.asp

There's this clause about the passport in the above link that says we'll have to provide our original passport if we require a TRV visa or photocopy of the information page of the passport if you do not require a TRV visa. So my point is I can't give my passport and provide only the photocopies instead. I just want to know if its ok if I provide the photocopies and choose the first option and return the passport only when summoned.

Kindly advise

As far as I can remember, I did not submit that document since I was still under 18 the last time I applied. It says on the website (http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/uae-eau/visas/53_1.aspx?lang=eng):

Schedule 1 – Application for a Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of Canada [IMM5257 –
Schedule 1](PDF)
• You must complete this form if you have answered “Yes” to any of questions 3 to 7 under Background
Information of the Application For Temporary Residence Visa Made Outside of Canada (IMM5257).
• You may be required to complete this form upon request of a visa officer.

You see that what's stated is Application For Temporary Residence Visa Made Outside of Canada (IMM5257). In our case, since we're study permit applicants, the form it is pertaining to is the "Application for a Study Permit Made Outside of Canada [IMM 1294]. And I guess the guide lines in the checklist is pretty self-explanatory.

Regarding the passport, you can initially submit a photocopy of ALL passports, including NEW and OLD. CIC will request for your passport once your application has been approved, through e-mail.

I hope this helps.

Since the checklist I'm following is this, http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/student.asp

I got confused and was clueless as to If I had to submit the original or not.

As I followed the above link for the checklist and since nothing was mentioned about including the old and cancelled passports I didn't include it. My old passport was cancelled 10 years ago while I was a dependent and didn't involve much travelling. I was a resident of UAE till 2004 and left for my home country. The visa was naturally cancelled, the passport expired with time and wasn't renewed until 2007. So in my case, do you think that not including my old passport(s) is going to be a problem? I'm now working in Kuwait and have traveled to quite a many places in this passport. I'm applying for my visa tomorrow and getting the passports to kuwait is going to be really difficult. My parents are in kuwait as well.

Kindly advise

Don't worry. All visa offices have the same checklist, some additional documents are just required depending on the country/visa office you're applying from, which mostly comes with guidelines regarding why you should include this/that or not. In my opinion, to be on the safer side, just fill it up and submit it together with your application. I think I will just do the same, so props to you for bringing up this topic. ;D

The reason why a lot of applicants submit copies of their old passports, together with the ones they're currently using, is because there are chances the visa officer will take into consideration their travel history. This can also prove home ties through passport stamps you get when travelling in and out of your home country to country of current residence, as well as trips to any other developed countries in the world. In your case, since you mentioned that you have traveled to quite many places in your current passport, then I guess you won't face any problems, so long there are not much important info on your old one.

I don't get where you are now. You're working in Kuwait. You will be applying tomorrow. Getting passports in Kuwait will be difficult. And parents are in Kuwait too. Are you in your home country right now?

I hope this all helps.

I'm working in kuwait. What I meant was if I had to produce my old and cancelled passports considering the fact that I'm applying for the visa today I won't be able to have it delivered to Kuwait in such a short time. There's no one back home who can find and courier it to me since my parents are in kuwait.
Vfs helpline apparently isn't really helpful in this matter. Called them up and they directed me to visit the cvac kuwait site and clicking the link to the application package takes us to the CIC site.
All my travels abroad are in my current passport. I'll try to get the old passports anyway.

I'm on my way to submit my application. One thing I think that doesn't go by the checklist is I'm not submitting the the original offer of admission as mentioned in the the abudhabi student checklist. I am providing the printouts of the offer letter which my university sent by mail instead which is just the same. Hoping it'd be alright.

And yes, your input helps. Detailed. Thank you so much
