Hi! My brother and brother in law (with respective families) are already in Canada. Earlier this year, my husband and I decided that it would be for good for our family to also migrate.

An immigration consultant advised an alternative way of migrating than the normal skilled worker processes. She mentioned that we (my husband and I) can both go to Canada as tourists but an employer will already be arranged for us. Upon arrival in Canada as tourists, the arranged employer and the consultant will then assist us with the process of converting our tourist visa to work permits and then to landed immigrant (not sure about the exact term). The consultant said that this will take only 12 to 18 months. Is this indeed possible? Has anyone successfully done it this way? Will it only take a max of 18 months?

Are there any other (faster but legal) ways to migrate to Canada?

My understanding (based on the experience of someone who recently went to CA on a work permit and is now PR) is that having a work permit does nothing to expedite getting one's PR visa. That is, there is no "converting" a tourist visa to a PR visa or a work permit to a PR visa. Having the work permit is great in that you can BE in Canada while waiting for the PR machinery to move, but it won't make it move faster. As for how long it takes, the times are available on the CIC website; they vary widely.

As for other ways, I hear that provincial nominee is faster than skilled worker. Based on the experience of another friend, business class/entrepreneurship is not. And for that you have to have something like $300K in the bank. Leaves me out! ;-)
