Just called Service Canada about getting my NOA/T4 2013 ready and my 'my account' set up and accessible for my CEC application that will be sent off at the end of March however low and behold we've just been informed we (me and my common-law) owe $1300 in taxes as they over paid us by that amount! :'(

I called Service Canada when back in June 2013 once we arrived in the UK and I questioned if we needed to do anything regarding SINs or addresses or anything and the lady said no we don't need to do anything. That was the end of that, until now.

Will this effect us getting accepted for PR/CEC? Will this damage our credit rating as technically we are in debt? I am in panic overdrive and can only hope even though it wont that our 2013/14 tax return will repay most of the $1300.

HELP/ADVICE PLEASE!

Do you owe the $1300 for taxes filed in 2013(Base Year 2012)? I'm guessing CRA reassessed your Tax Return and found that you either owe that amount more in taxes or the refund you got was miscalculated.
Anyways, owing CRA will not affect your CEC application. I'm sure you can get T4 from where you worked rather than accessing it from CRA My Account.
This won't damage your credit until CRA sends it to collection. You may however have to pay penalties which shouldn't be much.
Others may have a better opinion of this.

Cheers

Pay them the amount and the NOA will be updated for 2013 if u havent filled for taxes yet. And credit bureau doesnt report CRA activity. I have never seen CRA on any bureau.

I'd panic at owing that amount too, but as long as you take steps now to work it out with the CRA, you'll be fine.

Get your 2013 return filed ASAP, and if need be set up a payment schedule for the rest, and start breathing again.

Hi, thanks for replying. Yes its for the taxes filed for 2013 based on 2012 and yes your correct they reassessed my tax return, in November of which I wouldn't of even known about unless I called to access my CRA account today  - Unless of course the lady told me I did need to change my address on my details

CRA advised that it would be worth to write to them and ask if they can take interest charges off and stop charging the balance owed but the balance regardless still needs to be paid back. Although they said whatever tax return I get for year 2013 (filing soon when T4 is received) it will be taken off the balance of $1300.

As long as it won't affect our chances for PR and/or CEC application, I will be 'ok' with this, just and will set up a monthly repayment as I think they look into money side of things and obviously they need to check our T4's etc to see if we have qualified for the work experience that way. I really hope to god that it won't make us inadmissible!

Thanks though :)

Don't worry...just file your taxes...set up a repayment plan if necessary and everything will be okay.
CEC PR application won't be affected and definitely not would it make you inadmissable. 8)

Just a small bit of info...I had changed my address with CRA to a country in South America(Guyana) when I moved back here after filing my CEC application...after a month I got a letter from CRA stating that I owed them $16 for overpayment of GST Credit...I paid the amount immediately. Point is, sometimes the call center agents give incorrect information. You'll be fine so don't worry :)

Id be super happy with owing $16 ;D I get what your saying though because one representative first told me they owed me $1000 until he put me through too a second representative!

In regards to the T4/NOA for 2013, is it worth waiting until we have received them back to send of CEC or will the 2011/12 T4's/NOA be sufficient for the proof of work experience?

If you meet all the requirements for CEC I would say go ahead and send your application. For income(2013) you can submit a few of your last pay stubs. You can always scan and submit NOA/T4 for 2013 via email once you receive it. Just my suggestion...

I know right $16 ;D...CRA the great COLLECTOR...I've seen a request from CRA for repayment of 20 cents...believe it or not(worked at a Bank when I saw this). I'm sure it costs wayyy more just to process and mail that request hahaha.

agree with wessless, if you're ready to send your application now, you can send it with the docs for 2012 tax year, and send the 2013 docs later. A final pay slip from 2013 (if it shows cumulative information) would be a good addition.
