Since you are an American citizen, all you need to do is get an offer of employment from a Canadian employer in your preferred location and a positive LMO (Labour Market Opinion). The LMO is obtained for you by your employer. They have to apply for it at the HRSDC and it can take anywhere from a few weeks to 3 months to get. Once you have the positive LMO, you can enter Canada, and you will receive your work permit at the Point Of Entry (POE).

Thanks, but won't it be impossible to find an employer that is willing to wait a few months for that to be approved??

That's the challenge. There have been cases where people have received the LMO in 4-6 weeks too. The Temporary Foreign Worker route via the LMO is probably the quickest way to move to Canada and work there. All the other work programs like Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) take longer, and I'm not sure if you qualify for those based on your profession.
