American wife having baby in Canada

Hello all!

Quick question, as my wife and I can't find anything online besides the basics. We are hoping some person on this forum has the answer! :)

My wife is applying for PR, she's American (I am Canadian), and is currently on a visitor visa. She is pregnant and due in late December.

Our question is this: once our son is born, he will automatically be a Canadian citizen. Now because his mother is American, does that mean he will be a dual citizen? I have been reading we must contact a US embassy to claim a birth abroad to be sure he can claim US citizenship at birth, but it doesn't say anything about being dual. If we were to contact the US embassy and set up an appointment to get a CRBA, the form that proves his US citizenship abroad, would he gain the dual citizenship then? Or would he only be granted the US citizenship.

I'm hoping this question is making sense! Haha. We would like to travel to the US with him and don't want any hassle at the border, so we are just trying to figure this all out. We do plan on calling the Embassy with these questions as well, just thought we'd ask and perhaps someone who knew would answer.

Thank you in advance!

Does your wife have provincial health insurance as a visitor or a private insurance plan that covers delivery costs, or are you prepared to pay everything out of pocket?

Sound like your baby will be both a Canadian and US citizen (after the citizenship paperwork is complete).

Yes, my wife has private American health insurance. We have everything set up with the hospital already.

How about would we start that paperwork? Does it start with the reporting the birth abroad to the US consulate? I tried calling to inquire, but it directed me back to the site I was already looking on.

He will automatically get Canadian citizenship for being born in Canada. Nobody can take that away from him.

He can get US citizenship too if you apply for him. You can read up on how to do that here: http://canada.usembassy.gov/consular_services/birth-abroad.html

Thank you! This is the site I was looking on. I called up to the border patrol and ended up asking them since the embassy doesn't have a live person to speak to.

Thank you for the answers! Lucky little boy to have dual. :D
