So my sponsorship has been approved at Mississauga. Awaiting further info from Buffalo. Will it be okay for my spouse to move me to Canada and stay to visit (for up to 6 months?) If it's okay, can he use a Canadian address while we await his passport request? Or does he need to have a US address for the passport request? Can he send his passport from Canada and await it's arrival in Canada (assuming 6 months is not fast approaching and he does not ahve any immediate need to enter the US).

Approved sponsorship 4/9.
No info from Buffalo as of 5/2.

Thanks for your help....

Your spouse shouldn't try to cross until they have their passport. I know this from experience. If they try and are turned away, it will be recorded as "allowed to leave" and they will be heavily examined all the way through the process even though they have not actually done anything wrong.

As a tip, get your spouses Senator to request the passport if it was requested with expedited service paid for and they've missed the expedited deadline.

Technically he can't move with you, but yes he can "visit" while waiting for PR. You should search for threads regarding how to handle the border crossing as it can get complicated. Once he is here he can use a Canadian address for contact with CIC and will need to update the address on his file (you can do this via email, just be sure to include relevant details like full name, sponsors name, client id number, etc in the email). And yes, he can mail his passport from within Canada and have it mailed back to a Canadian address as well. But if you will be residing close to the border near Buffalo, I found it quick and easy to drive my passport down, turn around, and land the same day. No more waiting around!

If his visit status runs out before the PR process is finished, he can apply for an extension. It only costs $75 and he will not have to leave Canada while his extension application is processing.

Unfortunately, we'll be in rural Saskatchewan awaiting passport request. Will my spouse be able to fly from Canada to Buffalo and have a return ticket to Canada, with the explanation that he is going to get his PR status validated?

If he flies to Buffalo to get his visa, then he will just need to tell the IO when he arrives back in Canada that he wants to "land". He should plan on arriving at the visa office early in the morning. It will take a couple hours from the time he leaves the visa office until his info is updated in the computer.

Going to Canada on a vistors visa is fine as long as approved, which is pretty simple as long as they can prove that if his 6 months runs out they will return totheir country, even if he is going to apply for a extension still has to prove their intent to leave after the 6 month period. What ever office they applied though though may ask for an interview and he will have to return to that office for the interview.
I am married to a girl from Brazil and was going to bring her here on a visa to wait but they told me if there was to be an interview in Sao Paulo Brazil she would have to return for that interview applying abroud.
But A senior on here and the CIC office will explain this to you further im sure

Keep in mind that they can mail your passport back to you with the visa inside of it at the Canadian address and you can 'land' at a local CIC office. A lot of people do that now, just make sure you have your goods to follow list and stuff.

Passports are now required for both land and air crossing of the US/Canada border. I doubt he'd get in without one.
