I am an American citizen in California and I am looking to marry my Canadian partner in September. I had a few questions about the details of how to proceed. I am divorced and read that to marry in Canada I need a Canadian lawyer to write a note after reviewing my documents, stating that they believe my divorce should be recognized.
I also read that to marry in California I would only need to give my official divorce documents when getting a marriage license, however he will need a letter from Canada stating he has no record of marriage or divorce (he has never had either). Is this correct, and if so how do we obtain that letter? Will this marriage be recognized in Canada afterwards, and are there any other complications or details to note? We are planning on me immigrating to Canada as soon as possible after, and need to save time and money, so based on these it looks like marrying in California would be easiest (a beach elopement is also very appealing).
