Am I in danger of being turned away?

Hey guys,

I'm flying out to Canada, from Ireland, on January 24. I activated my working visa on March 25, 2015 but returned home shortly after because one of my parents had suddenly died shortly before I arrived and I realised that it was way too soon to emigrate.

However, there will still be two months left on my visa by the time I arrive, but I didn't book a return ticket and now I'm worried that immigration will turn me away because of it.

Does this seem possible? I realise two months isn't a long time, but for what I want to do it's long enough. I also have an uncle over there in Toronto, and he's a citizen so that might stand me in good stead?

It's difficult for any of us to answer this question since it's ultimately up to the CBSA officer you encounter at the border. Chances are high you should be fine. However I suppose it's possible you may run into an issue since your IEC is ending so soon and you don't have a return ticket. I suppose it's possible the CBSA officer may be concerned this demonstrates you have plans to stay in Canada long term. Again, hard for any of us to guess.

Is there a reason you only got a one way ticket? You may be asked for a reason.

I don't expect that having a Canadian citizen uncle will be of any help.

I have a friend who moved to Canada with two of his other friends and came home within two weeks. Change can be scary and given that I'll be over there on my own pretty much, I realise there's a chance I might not even last two months. That's why I didn't book a return ticket, because I simply don't know how I'm going to adapt. I could, in theory, go home within a week or I could last the two months.

They I guess I would use something along those lines for an explanation if asked. Say that you're hoping to take advantage of the last two months of your IEC by working. But if you don't find a job within a few weeks, you might return home sooner. That's a pretty logical explanation.

As others mentioned It totally depends on the mood of the officer. I can share from my experience as I returned to Canada just 4 days before expiring my study permit but I had the option to apply for post graduate work permit so the officer just asked why you don't have the return flight after four days and I explained that I will apply for PGWP and she was ok with that.
