I haven't done it personally since i suffered application being returned unprocessed for other reasons in which fault was on embassy's part until finally it succeeded in 3rd attempt.
However, i have read from others who sent additional documents this way latter. I am not sure if those were online submission cases or on paper, but i don't think it makes a difference as long as some one there is able to correlate both the items. Hence you must provide as much detail about yourself as possible.
In my first attempt, they only returned after a month WHEN I INQUIRED them. First they were not able to locate my application because i didn't add courier id and date. Instead i had only sent passport #, name and dob with contact info. Then upon sending details of tcs with the delivery report showing some one received it at embassy, they responded saying it was found incomplete and is being returned to me today via courier.
