If you need any help re: settling in Canada; please let me know. I was once like you leaving Bangladesh in 2005 for my UG degree. I studied in Windsor; worked in Windsor, Waterloo, Kingston & Toronto during my studies and finally settled in Sarnia. These cities are all located in Ontario, so I know quite well about it from an Int'l student's perspective.

Tuber123, cheers for your encouraging words. I live in Chittagong and went to VFS Chittagong today. They said my passport has arrived in Dhaka today (same time as yours) so hopefully it should arrive tomorrow. Is there a visa counter foil on your passport?

Np bruv. Yes there is a counterfoil.

U can give us some important points about settling down for first couple of months. Specially about home sickness. I think, it will be really hard for me to live alone there. :(

I am planning to open a Bank account in "Royal Bank of Canada" and also wants to buy Bell Aliant Mobile service. Can u please add something about it. How can I get a credit card over there? What kind of bank account will be suitable for international students?

Hey in my opinion you should open an account with TD bank if you are willing to get a credit card without having any credit history in Canada as a newcomer...it worked for me...you will be given a $500 credit...use and pay it back therefore you will be creating your credit history in Canada..in terms of type of bank account you should go to the closest branch from your school of any bank and they will advise you what kind of student friendly account they offer....hope this help...

Well, it really depends on individual how s/he deals with it. I came here at age of 20, lost my father just after 8 months and being the only child; I had to deal with everything life can take away.

Honestly, banks don't care about Int'l students. Like Arhaan said, TD will give you $500 credit, but you will be stuck with it for a very long time. RBC and BMO will be beneficial in the long run. I will do some research and let you know which bank works best for Int'l student currently. Meanwhile, you can check one of my posts re: banking in Canada for newcomers:

Thanks Rossei for ur valuable informations.

I have another question :

I don't want to bring my old laptop, so I have to buy a new one over there. From the websites, I choose Lenovo IdeaPad Y410p model laptop for me which cost around CAD 962 including 2 years damage warranty. There r 2 options for purchasing this laptop.

1. Using online purchasing system like credit card/debit card,
2. I have to find a shop nearby and have to buy from them.

If I want to buy this laptop from Canada, which option will be more beneficial or cost affective?

The electronics retailers in Canada are:

  • Best Buy
  • Future Shop (Best Buy actually owns Future Shop)
  • Canada Computers (good for hardware if you want to build your own computer system)
  • The Source
  • Sony store (brand store)
  • Apple store (brand store)

The big sale event is normally on Boxing Day (Dec 26) in Canada. There is also "back to school" sales running now. Laptops will be little cheaper in USA and their biggest sales occur on Black Friday (following day of Thanksgiving in USA).

If you want specific model (like: Lenovo Y410P), then your may have to order online. Most times, if you order it from Canadian site; they will ship it free. I would advise you to hold on to your old laptop (if it's functional), come here and look around. If you're catching Fall session, boxing day isn't far. Again, you can shop in US on Black Friday (proly Nov 29 in 2013) if you have US visa.

FYI, I'm not a fan of Lenovo since they got out of IBM. ::)

Those who are planning to buy electronics products in Canada -

I wouldn't suggest anyone to buy additional warranty for electronics products. Electronics products are usually covered by the manufacturer for one year warranty ....sometimes it could be two years. I bought two HP laptops when I came here in Canada and paid $650 for additional warranty ($325, each laptop). I have been using those laptops around seven years without having any problem. I think additional warranty is one of the ways of wasting hardship earning money.

I second that. In fact, I never bought any additional warranty for anything I bought in Canada/US.
