Canada to cap immigration applications for clearing backlog
Canada, 8th March: Canada's workload of immigration backlog is increasing and it can only be controlled by capping immigration applications.
Hence, the Tories want to introduce an annual cap on the number of applications to be accepted for Canada immigration annually.
Cap immigration to cut backlog--According to a House of Commons committee, the federal government must increase cap on Canada immigration applications to bring the immigration backlog under control. According to a report, the annual backlog for Canada immigration applications has already reached one million.
Moreover, the government is being urged to give top priority to skilled immigration in Canada keeping in view a backlog of 300,000 of Canada immigration applications received by CIC (Citizenship and Immigration Canada) before the year 2008.
Parliamentary secretary to Canada immigration minister Jason Kenney, Rick Dykstra says the government needs to focus on jobs in Canada to help boost the economic growth. Immigration can go a long way in solving the problems of the economy, Dykstra maintains.
So, the government must take decisions to bring the backlogs, especially in the categories of economic immigration, under control, he asserted.
Other recommendations for reducing Canada immigration backlogsBringing a change in the selection process of skilled immigrants is yet another step for bringing down backlog in Canada immigration.
Canada needs to give preference to young immigrants having fluency in either English or French for fast-tracking processing of Canada immigration applications. Moreover, priority should also be given to applicants possessing skills in great demand in Canada labor market, the committee experts assert.
The government does not intend to increase the annual limits of Canada immigration which is currently 250,000. It may be worth mentioned that CIC has already introduced a limit on applications under skilled immigration category (not accompanied by an offer of job in Canada), family reunification route, sponsored refugee system and Canada investor class.
Meanwhile, Don Davies, a NDP immigration critic, is of the view that Canada needs to approve increased number of Canada immigration applications for reducing immigration backlog.
Davies maintains that Canada must accept nearly 10,000 additional applications each year over the coming three or four years period. This is keeping in view Canada's ageing population, falling birth rate and more reliance on immigrants for filing skills shortage, he clarified.
Canada must work towards reducing the number of applications to be approved each year. This should be done to bring down the increasing backlogs of immigration applications in the nation. Each year, Canada immigration department CIC receives an overwhelming number of applications for immigration to Canada.
Canada needs to review its immigration policy for solving the problems of the economy. It must review various immigration schemes to make them suitable to the requirements of the nation. However, several critics feel that rather than imposing a cut on the annual intake of immigrants each year, Canada must work towards allowing increased number of applicants under different routes of Canada immigration.
