Hello to all,

Does anyone here have manage to apply for work permit by port of entry?

If yes, do you know what are the documents needed at the port of entry? Just for a brief, I am an Estimator with a multiple visa entry and already have a job offer from a employer based in Calgary.

Please, can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Jon

You need the written job offer, evidence you meet the skill requirements of the job, the LMO (or at least the LMO number - they can look it up on the computer) if necessary, a completed application ("Work Permit OUTSIDE Canada"), two photographs (though in my experience the usually don't use them), your passport, and the $150 fee.

With all the paperwork in hand, CBSA usually takes 15-20 minutes to issue your work permit at the POE.

Thank you very much for your reply, but as per the link (which I cannot post) it says I do not need a LMO, because Estimator is under a pilot project.

And I have more questions below;

1. Is there a application form that I should fill up? What form reference?

2. Will the border officer will only look on my documents, or will get a copy of my documents?

3. Does the work permit can be use for re-entry?

Again , thanking you in advance

Jon

Which is why I said "if necessary".

It's on the CIC website: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/work.asp - work permit OUTSIDE Canada.

I'd have a copy for them to keep if they wish, but in my experience they return everything.

No, a work permit is not a TRV. If you are not visa-exempt, you will need to apply to Ottawa (CPP-O) for a new TRV once you have the work permit, if you no longer have a valid TRV.

Does the checklist for the application of a work permit still apply? This one also states that if you intend to stay longer than 6 months you would require family information (imm 5646) and a police certificate? Thanks for your advice Computergeek you've been very helpful :)

You need to complete IMM 5488 (the checklist) but I don't see where it says you must provide a police certificate. If you are applying through a foreign visa office they may impose additional requirements such as a police certificate. I did not require a police certificate when I obtained my work permit.

Hi computergeek,

It became complicated to me after your reply to ErickNL. Is the document list IMM5488 applicable to me?, if I am under Alberta TFW pilot program?

Regards,

Jon

I'm not sure why that makes it complicated. Yes, you need to complete the work permit outside Canada application. The IMM 5488 (checklist for the work permit outside Canada) is part of that process so you will need everything on that list.

I just successfully flagpoled at Carway, AB. For paperwork they asked me for the form "Application for work permit made outside Canada", passport, job offer and contract. A small interview followed in which they ask for your motives, funds, plans, etc. After that I went back to the waiting room for 15 mins when I was called out again. Paid the fee and was back outside. All in all it took an hour, mostly because there was someone in front of me.

EricNL,

Is this happened just today?

Computergeek and Ericnl,

Do you know if this work permit application via port of entry under this Alberta Pilot Program is only applicable to citizens from visa exempt country?

Regards and thanks,

Jon

I don't know about this specific program, but I know that many people have flag poled when they are not from visa-exempt countries. You just get a slip from the US that says you were administratively refused. You just have to prove you are applying from outside Canada.
