Hello,
As part of the AINP program we landed in Alberta in Oct. 2011. Since then we are out of Canada.
We understood that after landing in Canada, the five year clock starts. As per this understanding we can be out of Canada till Oct 2014. From 2014 to 2016 we have to stay in Canada to meet the residency obligation of staying 2 years out of 5.

Is this correct or have we messed it up?

Pls. advise since it will affect our decisions.

Thanks.

You are right, maximum time you can be outside Canada in a 5 year period is 3 years. If you use up all your time outside, you will have to stay for 2 years straight afterwards and only then can you apply to renew your PR card. This may mean that your PR card expires during the processing time of the new one but that is ok. Nobody will kick you out for having an expired PR card. Better to apply for renewal with 730+ days in Canada than to apply too early.
