Here's an approx timeline for my case,

AINP sent to CIC: 2nd March
AOR/Med recd: 18th May
Medicals Sent: 2nd June
State Police certs requested: 26th June
State Police certs mailed: 25th July

I am still waiting for my passport request from CIC. The problem is that I have to leave the U.S before my visa expires within the next 15 days. I emailed CIC if a file can be transferred and they said they don't do that on an applicant's request and take the decision on a file transfer themselves, and that the only option the applicant has is to request a withdrawal of his application and to reapply for the process in his home country.

I am not sure whether moving back home would be a good idea at this stage of the process and I am running out of options of extending my stay here in the U.S. Should I just notify the CIC office of an address change to my home country and let them decide? Would this give them a reason to refuse my application? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Keep your plan as it could be. You can still use your friends' address in the US for all contacts. If it is possible you should file form I-539 (cost only $300) for extending current status or change your status to B2. You can do online, it is quite easy. In the waiting time (3-4 months) you are legal in the US with pending status and waiting for CIC Canada.
