age difference

Hello there people,

me and and my man met almost 2 years ago at an antique auction. So, it was a pure accident that we met (not on the dating site or anything like that). We fell in love and moved in together and had been living together for a year and a half. I never wanted to stay in Canada, although I've spent most of my adult life here (8 years). In fact, I was going to fly back home within a month at the time we met. Thus, obviously I am not applying for a PR to get into the country of my dreams, have a better life etc etc. I want to stay here because he is here. We have two dogs, one of which we got together from a shelter. We are buying a farm together (I am making the down payment an he will be responsible for a mortgage). Since, I was not planing on staying I never bothered finding a job that would've fit the Canadian Experience Class Immigration requirements, so I can't go that way. Family Class it is! =)) We recently got married (very small ceremony, nothing grand as we had to deal with some financial issues at the moment), right after he got his "5 year in the making" divorce finalized. So as you can see it is not a marriage of convenience by any standard. The only thing is he is 16 years older than I am =)). I know, everyone is thinking about the antique auction now =)) Yes they have great things there!!!! So, my question is will CIC look suspiciously on our application due to the age difference or not?

Thank you in advance, Itsy

Far more interesting than the age difference is how have you been in Canada for 8 years? In status?

If you are able to prove the relationship is a genuine one the age difference is not something that should be a concern, but the answer to the previous is something I would think needs to be satisfied since while an in Canada application is possible without status. There is the risk of enforcement action regardless of an application if out of status.

Hello,
thank you for being the first one to reply. I was studying here at first and than got the work permit, so it is all clear there =)) We were discussing the immigration issue the other day and started to collect "proof" and than realized that our age difference might be a problem. It just sounds stereotypically bad... Young girl + older dude. So will they see that we are a "classic" or will they automatically assume we are a "stereotype" is the big question. One just does not think about immigration when getting married. And now it is staring us in the face (my work permit expires in a year and a bit). Thus, we just want all bases covered and attack the situation before it attacks us (get more proof, specifically addressing this etc). Or if it is not a big deal, well it will give us some peace of mind.

Cheers, Itsy

An age difference, in and of itself, is not a red flag. Where it becomes an issue is usually where it is culturally outside the norm, especially when the age is tilted in favour of the female. Combined with other matters, such as quick development from inception to marriage/common-law partnership, prolonged attempts to get into or remain in Canada, significant disparities in standards of living between the country of the applicant and Canada, (to mention a few), that is when an age difference is a red flag.

It sounds to me like you can document your relationship from inception to marriage and then sponsorship, so overall don't put too much worrying into the age difference. Address it upfront, mention why it's not an issue for you both, and then leave it be. Don't ignore it, just address it and move on, same as you did when you developed your relationship.

It's a valid question / concern.

I'm 9 years older than my wife, but honestly, I know for sure this will not have any impact whatsoever on my application. I think it would be suspect if the age difference was greater than 20 years and if the circumstances surrounding the relationship are dodgy.

You shouldn't have any problems!

Good luck!

The husband being the older one is not seen as a problem in most cases anyway, and if the OP is from the USA I can't see it being an issue at all. Just state it is not an issue for you two somewhere in the application, and everything should be fine.
