After landing- obtaining ON driver's license question

Hi Everyone,

Wondering if anyone can help, please. I am looking to purchase a vehicle asap. I need to obtain my ON license and was told I need a 3-yr driver's abstract from Ohio in order to obtain ON license. The problem is, OH BMV will not email or fax the abstract- only mail to US address. However, I am no longer at the address and they will not accept credit card payment.

Has anyone run into a similiar situation and was there any reasonable resolution that was offered versus my having to rent a car to drive to Ohio to obtain this abstract?

Unfortunately your best bet is to drive to Ohio to pick it up. That way you get the correct document and you know where it is. It will make obtaining your ON license a whole lot easier. We had to do exactly the same thing only we had to return to central Illinois to get the abstract. The agent at the Ontario License place was relieved that we had obtained it.

Do you have any family in the US?
My husband had the same problem in Arizona. He got it sent to his mother back home, who sent it to us.

Do you live near the border? I would rent a box in a town near you (We have a box in Ogdensburg, NY) and have it sent there. Or to a family member. Very strange they will not send it to a Canadian Address. Did you offer a postage paid envelope?

Thanks for all the feedback! I find it odd that they won't send it to my Canadian address either. However, I was able to find a solution. I have to sign, scan and email a signed POA to my sister. She can then go and pick it up for me and scan and email to me. I'm relieved Thanks for everyone's advice and help!!

Just wanted to update as I went to exchange my US driver's license for an Ontario one and it went surprisingly smooth! They needed either your COPR or PR card, current driver's license and a passport. They did not need the driver's abstract upfront in order to issue the ON license; however, they did inform me that once I obtained an original driver's abstract to bring that in and they would update my file as the date I first received my driver's license as that will help to keep insurance costs low. For now, my US driver's license showed an issue date from 2010 so in Ontario, that will be looked upon as though I've only ever had a driver's license since 2010. So, I will get that asap as insurance costs are high already!

PS- If anyone needs a referral in Ontario for car insurance (or home insurance for that matter) I have a great friend of mine who is an insurance agent and he goes out of his way to help and get the best rate possible. Feel free to message me if you'd like his info.
