My husband's son moved to Canada from Australia and we submitted the permanent residence application after he arrived. To attend school, all they needed to see was the application payment. So anyway technically he is here as a visitor when he arrived. My question is, does he have temp status now that we have applied for PR? Or what would we have to do for an 8 year old to ensure he is here legally while waiting for PR? Thank-you

He's here as a visitor and was most likely admitted to Canada for a six month period. You'll need to apply to extend his visitor status when he gets close to the end of the six month period (if his PR application hasn't been finalized yet).

So even if we have submitted the PR, we still need to extend his visitor?

Yes, even with the application you need to maintain his visitor status. Remember, it's only an application for a PR. There is no status associated with it whether you apply from in Canada or outside Canada.
