Hi, I have a friend who is divorced and she is going to apply for the US visitor visa so while filling the DS-160 form can she go as a Single or she has to go with the divorced option will that affect as a visa refusal or single is the valid status.

divorced is right option, if she has changed her marital status in legal documentation (IDs, previous passport, marriage registration in government system, changing her last name or adding husband's name instead of father's name in IDs) during her marriage. then this can cause problems if she chooses single instead of divorced

I confirmed with her she did not change her last name, no changes on the passport, No changes on IDs only when she came to Canada she showed her marital status as married and as well as while applying work permit she used married status , and then she got divorced.

so her marital status is mentioned in canadian records
I would suggest not to risk it
this could lead to misrepresentation and if she is in Canada then this could cause problems for her here too
what is the reason for not mentioning divorce? if there something of significance

I know someone who had a very short-lived marriage. It was basically an annulment even if it is legally a divorce. She always uses 'single status' on all visa applications - two US visas, Schengen visa, and recently for Canada visa (approved last week). Since it has never been mentioned anywhere, it is fine. But if it shows up on even one travel record, then I would suggest 'divorced' is mentioned to avoid rejection.
