I am going to apply this week but I need some advice.

I am officially (on paper) a software developer but do not do much development these days and have different responsibilities. I originally started out as a software developer, changed department within the same company.. but my position remained the same.

I was going to ask the HR department to provide me with the reference letter so that I know under which NOC I should apply but a colleague suggested not to tell them my plans (in order to 'protect' my job/ not tell people what I'm going to do).

They would probably put me down as I am officially listed on papers, but I am not sure 100% (they are a bit vindictive sometimes). I can also get the country's official employment paper (which is provided by the state, not by the company)

I do not want to get my application rejected due to a discrepancy or for 'lying'.

I don't mind asking HR but would like ask for some advice, maybe from someone that had a similar situation.

Is it possible to apply under a NOC and change it later on should the HR decide differently?

Hi. You will be able to make changes to your profile until you get an ITA. This is when you profile locks up with the information and you only have the option to provide supporting documents and update address and personal histories.

i can understand your situation. if i were in your place, i would choose the NOC as :-

1 - NOC related to software engineer (for your first experience).
2 - NOC related to the JOB when you got transferrerd / promoted.

You can choose 2 different periods with different NOC's for the same company. The only thing you need to ensure is that the HR in your final letter would mention both your JOB role as well as a note about your promotion / transfer.

Thanks!
The thing is the jobs are kind of similair, so probably they would fall under the same NOC (1 is soft. dev other is deveops/sysadmin).

I also got promoted in the mean time from lvl 2 to 3 (career progression framework).

Would I put them as one job or two separate jobs?

As far as i understand, you did progress but that was within the same NOC. You can put 2 seperate entries if you are able to match your job duties to different NOC's. For eg : working as a software developer and then promoted as a program / project manager can be easily put under 2 different NOC's as the job duties are very different. However, working as L1 technical support and promoted to L2 tech support cant be put under different NOC's as the duties as the same; though your might be more tech oriented.

Let me explain it better:

When I started I started as a Junior Web Developer and spent one year with a particular team within the same department. About a year later I changed to a different team within the same department, and my position remained the same. I then applied for a promotion, which I got, and from Junior Web Developer I became a Web Developer. With the second team, the duties changed a bit, so I wasn't doing full-time development, more like DevOps or SysAdmin, but my position (on paper) remained the same. Most duties and responsibilities are the same (on paper).

I can put Software Developer NOC and then change it when I get my ITA? Is promotion for the same NOC considered as another job or the same job?

as i have said earlier, if all this is put on paper by your HR, you are free to choose the NOC you want. A promotion within the same NOC is the same job and same NOC.

Hi and thanks nishantvshah

It's a bit of a difficult situation

I was an Associate Software Developer then I got promoted to Software Developer.

I spent a year in the first level (Associate Software Developer) and had these official duties (which are written on company's job profile):
Assist withdeveloping component
  • Assist with testing component.
  • Assist with shaping documentation
  • Assist in gathering requirements
  • Provide component support beyond the first level
  • Other duties as assigned
Then I got promoted to the second level, after I changed the team within the same department. Officially (as written on company's job profile) I have these main tasks:
  • Develop component
  • Test component.
  • Shape documentation
  • Gather requirements
  • Provide component support beyond the first level
  • Other duties as assigned
Although my official position on paper was Software Developer, I was doing the same duties of a Technical Support Officer with the below duties (as written on company's job profile):
  • Investigate, diagnose and solve system related problems
  • Install and upgrades software
  • Schedule
  • installation work, liaising with all concerned to ensure that installation priorities are met
  • and disruption to the organization is minimized
  • Diagnose and solve problems and faults occurring in the operation of hardware and software
  • Comply with
  • organization procedures to ensure integrity of the system
  • Advise users on appropriate course of action
  • Contribute to Service Call Centre Knowledgebase
  • Monitor issues from start to resolution
  • Other duties as assigned
I did a little bit of development, but very little.

I want to avoid telling my manager/HR that I am going to migrate (they are a bit vindictive).

What NOCs should I choose?

It seems NOC 2174 and NOC 2281/NOC 2282 (I do duties from both - kind of).

What do you suggest I choose and put in the application in from these? Or should I contact HR?

Dear group members. I need your expert advice. It is about job title. While filling EE profile i chose the job title lecturer noc 4021 as my duties match with this noc. However my appointment letters have the job title of Assistant professor noc 4011 with which my duties and responsibilities don't match. I WAS fully aware of this thing when i filled EE PROFILE. I have received invitation and now it is making that have done something wrong. What would you suggest? Should i go with the job title of lecturer or make any changes in my EE PROFILE? Would it be right to change EE after ITA? Kindly help me. I m not talking about changing NOC. That will be same but only jib title to match it with my appointment and reference letter.

My reference letter consists of two similar points, actually got copy pasted and my I have already filed in PNP. Would it be an issue in future as one duty got repeated.
Is it a big issue ?

hello,

to be honest, you are the best person to judge which NOC to use. As i said earlier, sooner or later you will need to get the experience letters from HR. Imagine you getting an ITA. You will have 90 days to gather and send supporting documents which included JD and experience letters.

Its better to take the HR and your manager into confidence and explain them your intentions. My HR was hugely apprehensive about giving me the info but luckily our department head understood the situation better and convinced the HR to give me the docs. Its been 8 months since and we are all happy here. Im waiting for the PPR.

Hello,

Please choose the NOC accoring to your experience letters. You will need to provide proof of work experience for the NOC you have chosen. Even if you were a lecturer and your experience letter says assistant professor, you have to choose assistant professor. If you have already chosen professor and are unable to gather supporting docs, decline the ITA. correct the info and wait for the next ITA.

Dont worry. Small mistakes keep happening. there is nothing to worry about this. we are all humans and prone to do mistakes. the case officer would definitely understand this.

I was told elsewhere that I should not talk to HR as they will be of little help. I was asking whether I should split my job into two NOCs or just use one NOC for both positions (since they would fall under the same NOC).

the golden question is if you want to choose 2 NOC's, which is the 2nd NOC you will use. You say your duties remain the same.
