Hello everyone,

I landed in Canada on the 29th and got my study permit and the coop work permit. Both of them only have one condition stating "Not valid for employment in businesses related to the sex trade such as strip clubs, massage parlours or escort services". But does not specifically mention that I may accept work on or off-campus. Under the remarks, it just says "SXJ236". I'm a little confused now because when I went to apply for the SIN online, it says that the study permit should have a condition saying 'the permit holder "may accept employment" or "may work" in Canada '. Since mine doesn't say any of that, will I have to get my study permit amended? or is it implied that I can work given that one condition related to employment is already there and doesn't say that I can't work? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've seen a few open work permits online with that condition (google images). I guess it means you can take up any off/on campus job besides prostitution :) .

I think the issue is SXJ236 under remarks. Its a code that needs clarity, never come across with it

Quick google of "SXJ236" brings og CIC pages referencing "Open Work Permit" though the code was expressly mentioned on the pages. My best guess is that OP has been issued with an OWP and not a co-op permit. According to CIC:

As a co-op student, your co-op work permit might say:
  • you’re “not authorized to work for any employer other than stated”
  • your school is your employer
This is to identify you as a co-op student. It means you can work for any employer that’s accepted by your school’s co-op program.

I see your point. May be last bet would be apply SIN at Service Canada in person

I was thinking of doing this as well since that way they might just tell me then and there if there's a problem. I'm going to anyway give a call to IRCC on Monday and see if I can get some sort of clarification on this.

Hmm that's strange. But my coop work permit also has "Occupation / Profession: COOP" under additional details.

I got mine amended. If you don't have the proper conditions stated on yours, I think it would be best to get yours amended as well. It took almost 3 months for them to send it back though.
