Hi all,

I’m considering a future in Canada & have been doing some research over the past 3 months however I think it would be good to get some realistic advice/guidance from some of you on here.

Here’s my current situation;

- 21 years old
- Nationality English, living in England, hold UK passport
- Have been working as a “User Support Technician” (computer) full-time since May 2008
- Have around £2,000 GBP of savings
- Single, no dependants, loans, credit cards, debts, mortgage, basically I have no ties whatsoever.
- Highest education is secondary school in England

Canada is just one of my options, but I have to admit it’s by far my preferred option. Realistically I’d be looking to move in roughly 2 years – this gives me time to build up my savings (I’d be looking to have around £10,000 GBP before I even consider moving), & by this point I will have over 5 years experience in my line of work.

My preferred destination would be Ottawa, Ontario, I’ve looked at many other cities but this one really sticks out for me & I think there is so much opportunity for me there with all the tech-based companies. I'm actually even willing to change my line of work, even if it involves further education.

I’m aware I don’t qualify as a “Skilled Worker”, unfortunately at the moment there aren’t any I.T. Related occupations on that list. I’m just wondering what my best options/chances are of creating a future in Canada? What do you think is the best way for me to get there?

It’s pretty much my dream to move there & I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there. I understand it’s going to be a lengthy process but I’m ready to put the effort in & I know it’ll be well worth it in the end if I move there.

Just wondered what advice/thoughts people have for me?

Thank you in advance.

How about as an international student?
I guess that is an option but to be honest I've not even looked into the student route because I'd much prefer to get straight into a job.

Do I have any hope?

Thanks Nicholas.

Because I'm not classed as a skilled worker how difficult is it to be accepted for a PNP if I can only get an "average" type job?

You had mentioned Ottawa as a place you wanted to live. If that's the case, then for the Ontario PNP program you need to have a job offer in a skilled occupation in order to qualify. So for that province, unskilled won't work. More information here:

Thanks scylla.

It says in this link that part-time degrees are not accepted as eligible education, do you know if this is the same across all of Canada? I'm considering enrolling on a degree but would much rather keep my full-time job & study part-time,not the other way around. I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference if the degree is the same :s

Flux, if you are currently employed and your country is not being bombed, my honest suggestion is stay where you are.

Canada profits from the dreams and misfortunes of other nations while it has close to nothing to offer newcomers.

Take a summer vacation in Ottawa first, take a look around, speak with people and see how you like it before investing your time and savings into a wild goose chase. I know you can get some excellent air fare offers occasionally.

With this being said, white Irish and UK immigrants still fare better than average.
