Advice for Work permit from the UK

Hi,

I am really struggling to get the information I need and hoping this helps.

I would like to go to Canada in the new year to work temporarily. I have been in touch with a company and it looks like they are going to give me a job offer. However they cannot apply for an LMAI for me as they are a small company and do not have the funds etc. Therefore I need to get my own work permit.

What is the best option and will I be able to get a permit with only the job offer?

Would I need to apply for temporarily residency then an open work permit?

If you are the right age, you can look into the Working Holiday Visa / IEC program that would grant you a 2 year open work permit. The program is closed for this year but should reopen again in December. If you qualify, then you would have to submit your name into a pool and hope you are selected. For the UK there are always far more applicants than space available - so unfortunately no guarantee you would be selected.

Otherwise your employer needs to obtain an approved LMIA so that you can apply for a closed work permit.

No - you cannot apply for a TRP in order to qualify for an open work permit. A TRP is a special visa that is very difficult to get and is granted to individuals who are otherwise inadmissible to Canada (typically due to a crime). TRPs are only granted in situations where an individual has a very pressing need to be in Canada (e.g. terminally ill parent). You don't qualify for a TRP. Regular visitors to Canada don't qualify for open work permits.

Your choices are either the WHV/IEC program (if you are the right age and are selected) or the LMIA/closed work permit route.
