I'm excited to share that I've got my visa and will be traveling to Canada soon. My main goal is to apply for refugee status because of the crisis in Yemen. Once I'm no longer considered an international student, I can continue my studies without paying international student fees.

I have a few questions and would really appreciate your advice:

Accommodation: I've heard that if I don't bring much money, the government will provide me with a place to stay. Is this true? I’ve found a place with a roommate for $850/month. If the government doesn’t provide accommodation, will they offer financial assistance instead?

Hiring a Lawyer: Is it worth hiring a lawyer to speed up the process? I’ve heard it can reduce the time from almost two years to around 6-12 months, but it costs $5,000-$6,000. Is it a good investment in terms of time and money?

Arrival Process: What should I say and do when I arrive at the airport? Who should I talk to first?

Tips and Advice: Do you have any additional tips or advice for someone in my situation?

Understood, you will be arriving in distress and seeking Canada's protection. You'll need hand outs to feed you and house you.

Only tell me if you're comfortable - has your husband been abusive to you and will you require any counselling? Canada has a wide array of very safe and secure services for women of every ethnicity.

Oh man.
You don't have the full picture. People have just told you bits and pieces, but not the full truth about what you should expect here.
The moment you arrive in Canada, you will find a Limousine waiting for you at the airport. Immigration minister will personally greet you at the gate and will escort you to the limousine.
Next, you will be taken to a huge fancy house, this will be your permanent house. Outside the house there is a Bentley already has your name on the registration plate.
Next RBC's representative will visit you at home and will guide you as to how get access to your bank account which as CAD2,000,000 as a welcome gift to you.
I don't want to ruin it all for you, I will keep other things till later.

- A refugee claimant can not study for FREE. I believe it requires a study permit and you have to pay your own fees.
- Government provide financial assistance roughly (500 to 650$), Accommodation is expensive here, better to live in sharing.

i strongly recommend using the advanced search tool on this website to find the forums that relate to each of your questions. there is a lot of relevant information here and as you can see posting a thread brings more useless commentary than anything.

i live in toronto so my guidance is based on my experience here

- from intl student to protected person will take years possibly and it will reduce your fee, not make schooling free

- The government will not house you, what you have heard is not true, you will be eligible to go to a shelter but know they are overcrowded amongst many other things and often dont have enough space and a lot of asylum seekers end up sleeping on the streets. its a terrible situation

- the government can offer some limited financial assistance in the form of ontario works (you need to apply for it & be eligible) but that will not be enough to cover your rent and living expenses

- hiring a lawyer will not reduce the amount of time it will take to process your application. Check IRCC's website for their service standards regarding processing in land refugee claims. I would recommend hiring a lawyer or immigration consultant to walk you through the process and you should be able to get one for under $5000. If you are eligible you could get one for free under legal aid ontario. imo its a good investment since it's a life changing decision to claim asylum

- there are threads on here about claiming asylum at the airport. depends on which airport etc.

In one sentence you’re asking if you should invest $5-6k in lawyers fees, in the next sentence you’re asking how much financial assistance you can weasel out of the Government.

Obviously you have money since you have to prove the financials to get a student visa to come in the first place.

Yes....the government provides a $250 gift certificate so you can buy a tent and join the rest of the claimants living on the streets because the shelters are full and there is essentially "zero" accommodations available even for those who are genuine residents.
schooling is provided by the school of hard knocks.....all for free.....well, except for the cost to your dignity.
