I’m trying to understand the checklist IMM 5533 and necessary documentation. My spouse has an adopted child who’s an adult, not dependant and who will not come to Canada with them. Do we still need to provide the adoption papers?

Indeed, hence my interrogation about the documentation needed.

My spouse's adopted child is listed on IMM 5406 even as they're 40, not dependent and not accompanying.

In Part B, Section 3. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT CHILD(REN) of the checklist IMM 5533, the third paragraph says :
"For Adopted Child(ren): If your child(ren) is/are adopted, you must include adoption papers and, if the adoption was done according to
customary law and not through the courts, you must provide evidence of the adoption ceremony"

Does that apply to all adopted sons and daughters regardless of age/status, or only those that are minors, or over 22 but dependents?

The very top of IMM 5533, it says "SPOUSE (INCLUDING DEPENDENT CHILDREN)", it makes me want to believe we don't need to document the adoption but I would like to know of others' experience.

You don't need it for non-dependents.
