I have a 3 years old niece in the Philippines that I want to adopt. She is the daughter of my deceased sister. My sister was never married to her boyfriend and who has a new family now. My niece is being left under the care of her grandma. They wanted to me race the child but I don’t know where to start. My current status here is Citizen in Manitoba, separated, working full time and currently renting a room. Can you please share your thoughts about this?

The big issue is that her father is still alive so this would be considered an adoption of convenience. Canada does not like for families to adopt nieces, nephews or cousins unless both parents are deceased. There becomes pressure for families living in Canada to adopt family members and there have been cases where the adopted and biological children are treated very differently and some have been abused mentally and physically. This also results in parents in their home country being pressured to give up their children and they also suffer a loss. If you decide to go forward would suggest you get a lawyer. Do not tell the child she will be able to come to Canada unless it is 100%. Would be creating a plan B and even C if bringing the child to Canada through adoption is not possible. I know many women from the Philippines are still able to help their nieces and nephews to attend school so there can be longterm options for her to try and join you.
