Hello
I want to apply for university of Alberta or Calgary for master in petroleum engineering. I have the master of mechanical engineering (fluid mechanics) from Sharif university, Tehran, Iran (with a score of 17 out of 20). Do you think I have any chances if I have a high (over 100) TOEFL iBT score?

Thanks

Hi,

Most Canadian universities need atleast Mid-B Equivalent: 80% or 3.5/4.0 or 15/20 in final 2 years of a 4 years Bachelor's degree for students from IRAN and an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with no bands less than 6)(some may require IELTS score of overall 7)/ or equivalent TOEFL marks (which is minimum total score of 100 + 22 on Writing) for being eligible to apply to Master degree programs.
(Benchmark: Univ of Toronto requirements: http://portal.sgs.utoronto.ca/current/admission/intdegequiv.asp?#country).
Canadian universities DO NOT require GRE. The higher your Bachelor scores are, more your chances of getting admission (as it is among 1 of most important factor for getting admission). So, if you meet these requirements, you are most probably eligible to apply for Master degree programs at Canadian public universities.

You can pursue a course based master degree (M.Eng) OR a research oriented, thesis based MaSc. degree in petroleum engineering or closely related fields. The research based degrees are usually much more competitive, where one generally needs to show some knack for research (like published papers) and selected students usually get partial or full funding.

Here's the list of ALL recognized Canadian educational institutes eligible for OCWP+PGWP, listed according to province:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/participants.asp

To get into top grade universities, you are expected to have an excellent academic record.

You can see general rankings of Canadian universities.. not accurate but gives you an overall idea.. as to which universities are reputed: www.4icu.org/ca/

You need to go through the university department websites, contact the university departments to know more such as course content, graduate degree options, deadlines, tuition fees, admission procedure etc. You will have to do the hard work to find the right type of programs of your desire and shortlist a list of say atleast 4-6 more universities, you may consider applying to.

The application submission date for Fall 2013 (Sept) start in most universities is already long over, and you should consider applying for 2014 Fall intake, for which usually the last date can be anywhere between Nov 1 2013 (for research based programs) to Feb 1 2014 (for course based programs). Some universities MAY have JAN intake, to know more, check individual university websites.

Some of the universities offering Master degrees in petroleum engineering or closely related fields:

1. Univ. of Calgary: http://schulich.ucalgary.ca/chemical/graduate

-- Well known university, in a province witnessing oil boom.

2. Memorial University: http://www.mun.ca/become/graduate/programs/engineering.php -- World class university, perhaps has the lowest tuition fees for international students, high probability of funding.

3. Dalhousie University: https://www.dal.ca/academics/graduate_programs/petroleum-engineering.html

4. Univ of Regina: http://www.urengineering.ca/programs/petroleum-systems-engineering -- Sask. has 1 of most student friendly immigration policies, direct SINP nomination after Master degree, no job offer required... provided you meet the eligibility criteria.

Thank you very much...
I have two more questions: 1.Actually I already have a master degree in mechanical engineering (fluid mechanics) and want to apply for petroleum master degree. does this increase my chance (that I have mechanical engineering master)?

2. Do you about funds and that how much fund I may get? I know it depends on many factors, but I just want to know its usual range.

thanks

Hi,

1. Petroleum engineering is different from Fluid Mechanics. If you get admission to a good university, and write a strong... short, to the point SOP, justifying your need to upgrade skills and to gain further education in this particular branch of petroleum engineering... then there should be no issues. It will be even better if you could gain admission to a research based degree, which would give you an extra reason to justify your studies- i.e you want to pursue a research based career.

2. The Visa Section of the Embassy of Canada to Turkey is responsible for processing visa applications for citizens and residents of Iran. Check the official website of Embassy of Canada to Turkey, to know about all the requirements to apply for a Canadian study permit, including proof of funds you need to show as an Iranian citizen.

Hope it helps.

Best of Luck.

Hi Guys,

I want to apply for the Master in Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta. I checked the website and it said the minimum requirement is GPA3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate program. I have a GPA 3.3 and will soon graduate from University of Toronto in this May. I have a 12 months Co-op experience as a Research Assistant, and did a summer research with my professor at U of T. What is my chance to get admission ? Could someone tell me ?

Thanks a lot !
