Hello all,

I have recently got my study permit with validity upto 2015 (No visa, just got the permit sticker on my PP). I was wondering if I could defer my admission to the Spring 2014 term (January 2014) instead of this Fall 2013 term on the basis of which I have been issued the permit.

The primary reason of deferral is that the courses offered in my university for this term are NOT in line with my interests. The courses that will be offered in Spring 2014 are of my interest.
The program I enrolled in is a Course-Based Masters of Engineering program in which you have to complete your MENG by choosing courses. So I need to make these count and not just jump to Canada with any courses.

I've also asked from my University about deferral and will hopefully receive their reply on this soon. [UPDATE: University replied: I can defer and will receive my new admission letters by email and postal mail shortly afterwards) But I'm more concerned about the Permit/Visa side.

Folks at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=487&t=15 answer this question. But I want to be doubly sure. like am I putting my permit in danger/expiry/invalidity by not travelling immediately to Canada? What do the officers in Canada ask you when you arrive etc etc.

Your suggestions are needed.
Thanks.

P.S. I know I already asked the same question in another thread, but that was when I didn't have a permit. I hope you understand my concerns.

Oh dude! You case is just like mine!!
I got the visa sticker on my PP too! But I want to change the university and go for Winter or Spring semester :/!
What this website says is really good for us but i am too suspicious and worried! My only concern is what if by this they mean transferring while being in Canada, not changing the semester or the university before even going to Canada!

You can defer you arrival without any problem. You just have to get the LOA for that session and also Valid a reason if you are asked why you deferred?

Sorry to interrupt, but do you think there will be any problem if ,in a case like that, the LOA is for another semester and from another university?

No, unless you have valid reason or institution name stamped in the passport or Introduction letter.

I can see my thread being hijacked ;)

So I'm deferring to Spring 2014. The main reason is 'course offering'. I am doing this BEFORE even going to Canada for the first time. any idea??

I can get the LOA for the Spring 2014 session from my university. They may also mention my reason of deferral is 'course offering'. so...does the 'course offering' excuse count as a valid one? I really AM deferring because i dont want to waste money on courses I dont want to take. My MENG program is course based and I pay for what courses I enroll in. January 2014 has some good courses for me.

In mine uni also is the same case, this semester I have just one-2 courses which are suitable for me ...
I will still go , because i want to get use to there ,and want to adopt in the surrounding as soon as I can ,
I will learn alot in this time, Will take 1-2 courses, then in Jan will take 2-3 courses ..

I would go canada and study and fit in rather than sitting in my home, watching movies, doin nothing and saving money :P

Well ,,, If your fees are not much high,, u should go ,,,

I got the number of the cic helpline. Will call them tomorrow and see what they have to say on this.

If you call CIC 1-888-242‑2100 from Pakistan ,you probably would hear only the recording. The line is only for those who are in Canada."The Call Centre can answer questions, in English and French, about Citizenship and Immigration (CIC) services and programs, or applications in process inside Canada."
