There are many reasons why people immigrate. Some people are running away from persecution others are running away from dwindling economic opportunities.
One thing I can tell you after travelling around is It really depends on what kind of person you are to succeed out here. You have to be a go getter.
Personally am in Calgary for a few years just because of the companies here. Very soon I'll be out of here as soon as I get what I am here for.
