Are there any accountants/financial analysts in Canada on PR? Is it difficult to find a decent accounting job for immigrants? I am a CPA currently working in US and possess a Canada PR card. Please share your experience with finding a job after landing in Canada. Thanks.

Hi. It’s nice to see someone asking the question I keep on pursuing all the time. Honestly speaking no one can answer your question as every case is different in terms of credentials, past experience and above all LUCK. My application for visa is still in process, however, I have a lot of friends moving from middle east region with internationally recognized qualifications (mostly having equivalency with Canadian CA) and Big 4 experience. Will just try to summarize my understanding for you.

Toronto (GTA) no jobs or (at minimum) a difficult beginning…….. Guys moving to Toronto (even after passing CARE and getting Canadian CA) struggled significantly except for few lucky ones who just somehow managed to get jobs.

Alberta, Manitoba and to some extent British Columbia. Friends who were willing to move to these provinces got their job offers while staying outside of Canada (usually people here do the landing and come back to their jobs in middle east as the salary difference is significant). All they did is to contact international recruitment firm working in Canada. Some applied on the website of Big4 firms as well directly.

If I were you I would check if my State (for CPA) has equivalency with Canadian CA, pass CARE, get Canadian CA and then search for a job while holding on to my existing job in US

Hope it helps. Good luck for your future endeavors :)

I thought toronto is a financial center where jobs will be easier to find compared to other small cities? What is CARE? Any one else has experience with finding accounting or related job in Canada?

I work in banking. There are tons of banking jobs in Toronto. Granted, it may not be very easy for new immigrants to get these jobs (I can't comment on that unfortunately since I was born in Canada). But there are definitely tons of job openings in finance/banking.

CARE is CA Reciprocity Exam. More information can be obtained through this link

The location is 3rd floor, 110 Yonge Street, Toronto. TD's central recruitment team operates from this location.

Landed immigrants in accounting/banking field, please share your experience with finding a job. Is CARE or canadian certifications mandatory before I can find a job or can I find a job and pursue CARE and other certifications along with my job?

Hi All,

I am an Indian CA holding Certificate of Practice since last 6 years. I wanted to know if canadian CA designation is accepted throughout Canada or is limited to particular province. If I move from Ontario to Alberta, do I have to obtain CA designation for Alberta again OR CA designation obtained for Ontario province will be valid in Alberta?

Yes. CA from one province is acceptable throughout Canada, be it Ontario or any other province.

A CA in one Canadian province is a CA in any other province. In fact, reciprocity and easy mobility within Canada are cornerstones of the profession”.

On the same note, have you already passed the UFE exams for Ontario?

This is very useful thread. I think members who are already in Canada should also identify additional skills and secondary alternate/additional qualifications besides our primary accountancy qualification which one should acquire to improve hiring chances. Further someone in this forum has already identified that there are number of jobs available in banking sectors. As an accountant we are mostly focused in booking keeping area i.e. jobs in accounts and finance departments. I would be glad if someone can highlight other banking area in which accountants have openings/opportunities. Especially this is more important in context of additional skills and qualification which one should acquire to improve employment chances in banking sector. There may be short courses/certification in credit/risk area in context of banking sector jobs which one could study to improve employment probabilities.

Thanks mate.

I am currently awaiting my stamped passports from NDVO. I have not passed the UFE exams.

As per MOU between ICAI and CICA, ICAI member is eligible for CICA membership if he fulfills the following conditions:

1.He/she is holder of a University Degree
2.He/she is a member of Good Standing (Letter of Good Standing to be obtained from ICAI)
3.He/she has completed practical experience requirement
4.He/she has passed Uniform Evaluation (UFE) Exam.

I am confused as to which one is better?

1. CICA membership OR
2. Provincial CA Designation (e.g. Chartered Accountant of Ontario).

The best way to find out about what kind of jobs are available and find out what qualifications are required is to visit the web sites of the big Canadian banks and look through their job postings.
