if you are looking for short term accomodation - you could arrange that online, i.e. hotel, guesthouse,...etc

however long term accomodation, is a bit more complex, you would need to sign an agreement, if you don't have a job - most landlords will ask you for a cosigner...they would have to see you in person as well and get a feeling of who they are dealing with...etc.

not discouraging you, just reflecting the facts

Any recommended online portal to search accommodation will really help.

Thanks,

kijiji is very common here, airbnb is becoming common too (however beware of scammers, although most ads are genuine - unfortunately there are some scammers out there too - use your common sense), safehomestay is a guesthouse, studio 6 is sort of a motel.

I haven't tried any of these though, had a friend here who helped me out with accommodation when i first arrived.

1. It depends on your preference, you could bring it in cash, travellers cheques or draft cheque (note that it takes some time to cash it, could be a few weeks and there's a fee of course), or you could have a mixture of both cash + draft.

2. I'm not from india, but yes...you can open an account from india through scotia bank, "http://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/0,,4362,00.html"

3. Well if you will be opening an account from india, then i think the only option you have is scotia bank. if you chose to open an account upon landing, then it would be better to choose one which is on close proximity to where you're staying, with nearby atm's..etc. Generally all major
banks offer similiar packages to newcomers, but the differences you would observe are mostly in customer service, monthly charges ..etc.

4. I'm not a fan of insurance honestly...i took the risk for the first 3 months until i got covered by ohip, but if you want to - the only one i know is "sunlife" http://www.sunlife.ca/ , they offer health insurance, you can have a look at their website and see if they suit you.

Hi,

Just one question:

we are a vegetarian family and therefore need an furnished accommodation with cooking facility.

How do i check if cooking is permitted or not? Some service apartments have kitchenette that has microwave and coffee maker. Can i presume that a gas or electric stove will be there for sure.

Also, we are 2 Adults and 2 kids (5 & 8 ages). Do i search for accommodation for 4 guests or 2 guests.

Thanks for your help.

If there is an option, select 4 guest. Every properties are different. You might have to call them to make sure you have a gas or electric stove.
