Absent from Canada while accompanying spouse and children abroad

Hi,
Got my PR card in 2013 and since then have been living with wife (Canadian national) and kids (both born in Canada) abroad. I was informed that the number of days spent abroad with Canadian family members will be counted as qualifying days towards eligibility for PR renewal. Please assist.

Spouse - yes. Children - no.
